Hubmann rapste in PostFinance sprint

Als opwarmer voor de Word Cup finale in frankrijk komende week, stonden heel wat toppers aan de start van de PostFinance sprint in Bern, Zwitserland. Deze PostFinance sprint zal volgend jaar zelf een deel zijn van de World Cup.

De Zwitser Daniel Hubbman was de snelste in het stadcentrum van Bern. Hij won met 29,2 seconden voorsprong van David Scheinder. Voor die tweede plaats was het bijzonder close, want Matthias Müller en Öystein Kvaal Österbo namen de gedeelde derde plaats op 0,7 seconden van Schneider. Hubmann is de leider in de Wereld Beker, en staat dus zeker op scherp de volgende week.

Simone Niggli won niet helemaal onverwacht bij de vrouwen. Ze was 26 seconden sneller dan de Zweedse Kajsa Nilsson. Voor Nilsson werd na enkele kwakkeljaren, 2006 het jaar van de doorbraak. Martina Fritchy werd derde op 46 seconden.

Preview BK SPRINT - English/Dutch

The last Belgian Titles for this season are going to be handed out next Sunday. As the previous 2 years, the orienteers will run in a beautiful little city, this time the Belgian Sprint Championships will be held in Aarschot. The laatstepost-team tries to give an overview of the candidates for the medals!

The Belgian sprint level is pretty high, as we have all seen this at WOC 2006. The men perfoming well there are obviously the favourites for this Sunday. Let’s wait and see if Pieter Hendrickx en Jan Gilot can live up to the expectations.

Then we have another group with outsiders. Etienne Van Gasse is one of them, for those that remember his 5th position in the Sprint World Cup in Italy 2005.We can’t forget Johan Goubeau, who has a past in athletics, but can he keep up with the older guys? Jeroen Hoeckx is more a “classic” orienteer and won’t be running on his favourite terrain this weekend. Which one of the Van der Kleij brothers will this week win their inter-family competition? Dries can certainly be placed among the favourites, with a 5th place last year backing him up.
BK Middle surprise Tomas Hendrickx, a multiple JWOC representative for Belgium who had left orienteering for a few years while starting a family, could maybe surprise us again.
Geert Simkens usually shows his strenght in more tough orienteering races, a victory from him would be a surprise.
Bart Delobel is probably one of the only ones who has the same speed as Pieter and Jan, he showed this also at the Flemish Championship Sprint.

Furthermore we can note a few absentees. Planning of this competition means that some of the Belgian Elite runners will be in France to represent the country at the World Cup Final, namely Christophe Bernard, Jean-François Krier, Michel Bastin, Joost Talloen, Fabien Pasquasy and Nicolas Sillien.
Also Tom Herremans is not present. We could say that he was the one starting the successes in International Sprint Orienteering for the Belgians with a 15th place at the PWT in Czech Republic in 2001.
UPDATE: After the reactions we got on this thread, we can now announce Tom is probably running this sunday!
Young talent Jochen Verdeyen , impressively 4th at the JWOC sprint this year, choose to run in his category, Men Juniors, and therefore won’t be challenging the seniors. His goals this autumn are still on the sprint and he is hoping to perform well at the JEC sprint later on this season.

In the women’s race, we can, once again, expect a victory of Greet Oeyen. With Aline Hermans probably another contender for the title. The new mum probably has already built up enough fitness to keep high speed for this distance. Veerle Tulleneers and Kim Geypen, both fast girls, will also be dangerous for Greet.

Nederlandstalige versie

Zondag mogen we de OL-schoenen nog eens in de kast laten staan. Voor de verdeling van de laatste belgische titels zijn namelijk de loopschoenen meer aangeraden.

Traditiegetrouw (in hoeverre we al op een belgische sprint geschiedenis kunnen spreken) mogen we weer een pitoresk stadje onveilig maken. Vorige jaren ging het respectievelijk om Hasselt en Sankt-vith. Dit jaar is Aarschot aan de beurt.

Uiteraard trekt het grootste deel van het deelnemersveld in de eerste plaats met een ambitieuze gedachte naar Aarschot. Daarom overloopt het delaatstepost-team voor u al eens de kandidaten.

Dat het belgische sprint ol niveau relatief hoog ligt bleek op WOC 2006. De mannen die daar sterk presteerden zijn uiteraard zondag de favorieten. Afwachten of Pieter en Jan voor een derde week op rij aan de verwachtingen kunnen voldoen. Hun vormpeil van de afgelopen weken doet vermoeden dat het moet lukken. We kunnen dus wel stellen dat weer de grote kandidaten zijn.

Dan is er een tweede groep met outsiders.
Tot deze groep behoort Etienne Van Gasse (ik wil u nog maar eens herinneren aan zijn 5e stek in de sprint world cup in Italië 2005, wat hem vorig jaar het gouden kompas opleverde).
Johan Goubeau mag vanwege zijn atletiek verleden ook niet vergeten worden. Het valt nog af te wachten of hij met zijn jonge benen aan de 'oudere' garde kan typpen.
Over Jeroen Hoeckx kunnen we hetzelfde zeggen. Maar Jeroen staan eerder bekend als een rasorienteur die het eerder van zijn jarenlange bosloop-ervaring moet hebben. Zondag staat dus zijn favoriete ondergrond niet op het programma.
Vraag is ook welke Van der kleij broer deze week aan het langste eind trekt. Dries mag vanwege zijn 5e plaats van het vorige jaar zijn naam gerust in het lijstje der favorieten zetten.
BK middel revelatie Tomas Hendrickx kan zondag al het goede bevestigen. Ook clubmaat Geert Simkens staat terug op de startlijst. Geert is de kracht-orienteur bij uitstek. Een overwinning zondag zou dus toch een verrassing zijn.
Omegaan Bart Delobel is fysiek één van de weinige die Pieter en Jan kan bijbenen. Op het Vlaams Kampioenschap sprint toonde hij dit ook aan. We hopen voor hem dat hij zondag nog eens dergelijke prestatie kan neerzetten.

Verder zijn er enkele jammerlijke afwezigen. Zo wordt ons land hetzelfde weekeinde vertegenwoordigd op de world cup te Frankrijk door Christophe Bernard, Jean-François Krier, Michel Bastin, Joost Talloen, Fabien Pasquasy en Nicolas Sillien.

Ook de afwezigheid van Tom Herremans is een spijtige zaak. Ondanks de recente mooie sprint successen van onze landgenoten (woc en jwoc) was hij het die deze trend zette. Wie herinnert er zich nog zijn a-finale op korte afstand woc 2001? En vooral wat er op de historische 8 mei 2001 gebeurde? (8 mei 2001 haalde Tom een puike 15e plek op pwt te Tsjechie. Geïnteresseerden moeten vast en zeker de pwt-site bezoeken de vele grote namen die hij te vlug af was bezien).
UPDATE: Na de reacties op deze post, kunnen we nu dus zeggen dat Tom wel zal starten zondag! Hij staat nog niet op de startlijst, maar zou "naar het schijnt" als eerste senior de straten van Aarschot onveilig mogen maken....

Tenslotte werd er gehoopt dat Jochen Verdeyen ondanks zijn jonge leeftijd toch al eens bij de open categorie zou meedoen. Laatste weken is hij zichzelf weer volledig op sprint-ol aan het focussen. Zijn doelen voor het najaar lijken duidelijk de sprint van zondag en jec-sprint.
Hopelijk kan hij daar al het goede van jwoc herhalen.


Bij de vrouwen komt er een zoveelde duel tussen Greet Oeyen en Aline Hermans. Greet start weer als grote favoriete. Een overwinning van Aline zo snel na haar bevalling zou een verrassing van formaat zijn.
De snelle Kim Geypen en Veerle Tulleneers blijven gevaarlijk.

Zondag het verdict, maar nu al tijd voor pronostiekjes op het forum...

Orientatie in Antwerpen Centrum

Een interview met één van de organisatoren: Peter Bleyens

Wat hebben jullie vorige week precies gedaan? Hoe geef je een initiatie zonder iof-kaart?

In het teken van de auto vrije binnenstad in Antwerpen is er een groot sporthappening georganiseerd door de sportdienst en Bloso van Antwerpen. Zij hebben 27 federaties gecontacteerd om hier aan deel te nemen. VVO is hier meteen op ingesprongen en Trol heeft dan een stadskaartje (kaart) gemaakt speciaal hiervoor.We hebben een labyrintoriëntatie
gehouden (kaart).
Eender welke vorm van kaart is te gebruiken voor oriëntatie, maar zoals bij elke kaart moet er het noorden aanwezig zijn. De basisprincipes die worden uitgelegd zijn: kaartoriënteren, kaartcontact en herkenninglijnen.Het grote voordeel van oriëntatie op kleine ruimtes is, wanneer je voor de eerste maal met de sport in aanraking komt, je niet verloren kan lopen en er steeds iemand is die je kan helpen wanneer het moeilijker gaat.

Hoe was de opkomst?

Op het labyrint hebben wij vooral kinderen gehad en was het aantal rond de 250.Op de stads-ol een 50 tal personen waaronder een 15 nieuwkomers.

Wat waren de reacties?

Zeer positief en voor diegene die de stads Ol gedaan hebben werd er al gevraagd om hier indien mogelijk het BK sprint te organiseren.

Heb je zelf één van de andere sporten geprobeerd?

Daar hadden we jammer genoeg de tijd niet voor

Dit was dus zeker een geslaagde organisatie. En nu maar hopen dat al die 250 kinderen de oriëntatiemicrobe te pakken hebben gekregen.

WRE's in Belgium

Until now there is only one organisation ready to make a World Ranking Event.
This is the the "Match Interland EOC-FRSO-NOLB-VVO-WTB" on the 18th of march 2007.
Normally the Belgian Championships Long Distance on the 9th of september will also be a WRE. But there are some things to do by the organiser BORASCA.

If the rules for the World Cup stay the same as they are now this means a disaster for Belgium. We will not be able to send more than 1 atlete. Other countries will certainly do efforts to get a better rank. Of course the best way to get a higher rank is to organise WRE's in your own country since the best 20 runners are taken into account.

The belgian commission decided to organise trips to WRE's instead of doing a training week for the national team. Of course there will not be more than 10 runners who will be prepared to go. It's a good initiatif but it will probably not be enough.

Belgium is allowed to organise 4 WRE's, why don't we do so?? One reason is that a WRE costs 200 euro for the organiser. ABSO-BVOS only has money to organise 2 WRE's. If this is the only reason it would be very sad. Because in this way IOF favors the rich countries.

These 400 euro for 2 extra events shouldn't be such a problem for Belgium. Many ways to collect this money. But now we know why there are NO WRE's in Russia or Ukraine. And now we know why these countries are below there standards in this ranking.

So what we as athletes suggest is to make all 3 belgian Championships a WRE. How the money for these events will be collected can be discussed. Sponsoring? Clubs? Competitors?
Belgium will also be able to attract more international orienteers if we have these WRE's.

BK MIDDLE: PIETER HENDRICKX AND GREET OEYEN WIN.

Vandaag werd het belgisch kampioenschap middel distance gelopen in Bel. Een mooie locatie, een lekker weertje en een prachtige organisatie door HAMOK.
Greet Oeyen haalde het met overtuiging van Kim Geypen en Tinny Dams, respectievelijke 2e en 3e. Pieter Hendrickx werd de verdiende winnaar bij de Heren. Na een reeks 2e plaatsen kon hij vandaag zijn gram halen.

Zijn verhaal: "Fysiek ging geweldig, ik vloog door het bos. Aan de 4e post maakte ik een fout. Ik was verrast door het geel dat al eerder kwam dan verwacht. Ik verloor ongeveer 1 minuut omdat ik te vroeg begon te zoeken. De rest van het parcours ging wel vlot. Ik kon een aantal jongens inhalen en dat gaf me een gevoel. Hier en daar verloor ik nog 10-20 seconden. Dus een perfecte race was het zeker niet. Maar ik ben erg tevreden met deze overwinning. Vorige jaren werd ik telkens 2e op het BK middel. Deze keer heb ik gelukkig kunnen winnen. "

De selectie voor de JEC 2006 (Junior Orienteering Cup) is al langer bekend, maar nu ook officieel. De JEC vindt plaats van 5 tot 8 oktober in Spiez, in Zwitserland.

Johan Goubau heeft zich in laatste instantie ingeschreven voor het BK in Geel. Dit waalse talent werd in 2005 kampioen sprint en middel in H-18 en komt dus voor het eerst aankloppen bij de grote mannen.

door zijn late inschrijving zal hij als allereerste starten. Een richttijd is dus gegarandeerd.

Volgende zondag staat het BK middle distance op het programma.
De favorieten starten achteraan. Met tussen hen een wat minder grote favoriet.




Bij de vrouwen zijn het de laatste 10, bij de mannen de laatste 18. Fabien en Greet starten als laatsten. De winnaars zullen dus ook pas rond 13u bekend zijn.

Grootste afwezigen zijn Johan Goubau, Wim Peers en Geert Simkens. Deze laatste heeft een verplichte oefening met het leger zo wist hij ons te vertellen.


Het terrein in Bel wordt omschreven als "snel open bos met enkele zandduinen en klein reliëf". Het wordt zeker en vast een spektakel aangezien er een geluidsinstallatie werd beloofd door de organisatie.

WORLD CUP France - maps and terrains

In 2 weeks the world cup final will be in Clermont-Ferrand in France. Not much time to prepare.

footpaths." That's how the organisors describe the terrain.
Low visibility, stony underground and detailed map the hole course make it very hard to run fast. Concentration from start to finish is crucial. Loosing contact for just a few seconds can easily cause major mistakes.
The course setters expect very slow winning times in Middle Distance and long distance. A speed of 7'15"/km for men and 9'00"/km for women is very slow in comparison with other championchips. Matthias Merz and Ines Brodman ran at a speed of 4'32"/km and 5'55"/km last week at the middle champs of Switserland for example.

Maybe we can have surprising winners but Thierry Gueorgiou definitely is a big favorite for middle distance. He has been training a lot in this area. You can see some trainings of him in june on his site.

Norway (Øystein Kvaal Østerbø), Switserland (Simone Niggli-Luder) and Belgium (Fabien Pasquasy) have been training on the same maps as well. You can see extracts of the maps on their websites.

If you go there as a spectator you should definitely visit Puy de Dôme.
The competition starts the 2nd of october with the middle distance qualification.

Gold for Tero Föhr and Minna Kauppi

After a non-surprising qualification race in the morning all favorites started in the final.

Petteri Muukkonen (MS Parma) was the first favorite to start in the final. He ended in 33'02". A very strong time. It was Tero Föhr (Vehkalahden Veikot) who could beat this time by 30 seconds. He had a very good raceand it would be very difficult to beat his time.
Matthias Merz (Rajamäen Rykmentti) ended in 34'15" almost 2 minutes after Tero. He could not get the level of the swiss championship 1 week ago. Jörgen Wickholm (IF Sibbo-Vargarna) had a good race but finished 50 seconds slower than Tero.

Pasi Ikonen (Vaajakosken Terä-favorite of the poll) could catch Jarkko Liuha (Vehkalahden Veikot) who started 2 minutes in front of him. But at the finish he was not fast enough to beat the very strong time of Tero Föhr.
Jarkko Huovila (Halden SK --> Tampereen Pyrintö) made too many mistakes and ended up in 16the place. Antii Harju (Kalevan Rasti) could get close to the splits of Tero. He catched Jarkko but they both made a mistake at the second last control. Harju finished 50 seconds too late and ended in 5th place. Jani Lakanen (Vaajakosken Terä) was the last one who could beat Tero. But he made 2 little mistakes and ended in the same time as Pasi. They both got bronze.


Minna Kauppi (Asikkalan Raikas) was the absolute favorite in women's class. She made a mistake of 50 seconds but was still much faster than all the rest. Maria Rantala (Angelniemen Ankkuri) was 2nd. Bodil Holmström (Turun Suunnistajat) finished in 3th place.
Heli Jukkola (Rastikarhut) a bit disappointing finished 4th.

Favorites Finnish Championship

Zweedse kampioenschappen

Vorig weekend gingen in de zweedse regio Skane de nationale kampioenschappen van start. De finale van de lange afstand werd op zondag gelopen.

Niclas Johannson werd de winnaar bij de heren. Zijn wedstrijd was zowel technisch als fysiek bijna perfect. Na een mislukte race op het WK doet dit ongetwijfeld veel deugd. Op de 2e plaats vinden we Tobias Noborn terug. Het podium werd vervolledigd door Eric Axelsson.
De thuisfavoriet Johan Modig, in onze poll nog als een van de favorieten bestempeld ging de mist in en werd slechts 19e.

Bij de dames ging de titel ietwat verrassend misschien toch wel naar Jenny Johansson. Zij staat meer bekend als een specialiste van de “middle distance” en heeft dit seizoen enorm veel blessureleed gekend. De blessure opgelopen op het WK te Japan bracht haar training voor het WK te Denemarken danig in de war en er is zelfs even sprake geweest van de OL schoenen voorgoed op te bergen. Deze zege was dat ook een enorme opsteker voor Jenny.
Slechts op 3 seconden achterstand vinden we Emma Engstrand, misschien wel de favoriete van deze race, zeker na het forfait van Karolina Hojsgaard. Zij verloor de race aan de voorlaatste post waar ze door een slechte wegkeuze gedwongen werd een stukje om te lopen. Kajsa Nilsson, de opkomende ster, geboren en getogen in Skane en momenteel vertoevend in het Noorse orientatiemekka Halden werd 3e en was hiermee uiterst tevreden.

Dinsdag stond het Nachtkampioenschap op het programma in Degeberga. Hier werd veel verwacht van Emma Engstrand, die na het nipt missen van de titel op zondag uit was op revansche.
Het werd echter de minder bekende Johanna Svensson die de titel op zak mocht steken. Vorig jaar werd ze 2e op deze discipline dus een echte verrassing mogen we haar niet noemen, bekend in het internationale OL-wereldje is ze echter zeker niet.
Emma Engstrand werd uiteindelijk 2e en Sofie Johansson 3e.

Bij de mannen mocht de 40-jarige Thomas Asp, IFK Goteborg, de gouden medaille in ontvangst nemen. Zijn taktiek is toch wel opmerkelijk te noemen. Hij koos ervoor om consequent rond te lopen via de paden, dit zelfs bij benen van maar 200 meter lang.
Hij was toch enigszins verrast dat hij hier kon winnen en liet de veel jongere lopers Andreas Jansson en Marcus Millegård, op plaats 2 en 3, achter zich.

Vrijdag en zaterdag worden de kwalificaties en de finale van de ‘middle distance’ gelopen en zondag wordt de felbegeerde title van Zweeds aflossingskampioen betwist.

Jan Gilot Flemish Champion - Vlaams kampioen

Jan Gilot still is in the winning mood.During his race he actually did not think he would win. After a few mistakes in the beginning he lost about 2 minutes at control 11. But also his main competitors Pieter Hendrickx and Bart Delobel made mistakes. Bart came 2nd and Pieter joined them on the podium in 3rd spot.

In the women’s race, Veerle Tulleneers showed she is definitely back. Both she and Greet Oeyen made mistakes and could have run a lot faster, but in the end it was Veerle who won.
Aline Hermans finished her race in 47 minutes, only 6 min behind on the 2 leading girls, not bad for a new mum!

Most orienteers who had already run on the map were a bit disappointed after their race. Unfortunately the organisers only got permission to run on the northern part of the map, which meant the most beautiful and technically interesting part of the map was not used in the courses. On some places the map even was pretty dubious..so there was a lot of discussion going on after the race, luckily it was nice weather!

Wim Peers also told delaatstepost he is not participating in the Belgian Champs middle and sprint. His focus will go to preparing for next season instead.

Jan Gilot zet zijn zegereeks verder. Tijdens zijn race had hij er echter geen vertrouwen in. Na enkele kleine missers in het begin verloor hij 2 minuten aan post 11. Maar ook zijn concurrenten Pieter Hendrickx en Bart Delobel gingen in de fout. Bart werd 2e en Pieter vervolledigde het podium.
Bij de vrouwen was het Veerle Tulleneers die aantoonde helemaal terug te zijn. Zowel zij als Greet Oeyen lieten heel wat minuten liggen, maar Veerle trok aan het langste eind. Aline Hermans finishte haar race in 47 minuten, 6 minuten achter het leidersduo, niet slecht voor een kersverse moeder.

De meeste orienteurs die al eens op deze kaart hadden gelopen kwamen teleurgesteld uit het bos. Er was enkel toegang gekregen tot het noordelijke deel. Op de koop toe klopte de kaart op een aantal plaatsen niet. Jammer.

Het goede weer kon de gemoederen gelukkig wat bedaren.

Wim Peers kondigde nog aan ook niet deel te nemen aan het Belgisch kampioenschap Middel noch Sprint. Hij focust zich op volgend seizoen.

Mooi weer, een uitdagende kaart, sterk deelnemersveld, militaire beveiliging... alles was aanwezig om er weer een geslaagde wedstrijd van te maken. Trouwens nog steeds een van de populairste onderdelen van het orientatielopen is een aflossing, in Nederland ook wel verenigingsestafette genoemd. Dus iets voor 10u verzamelde een groot gedeelte van de Belgische orientatiewereld in het oude militaire depot te Zonhoven. Op een grote openvlakte was dankzij het Belgische leger een heel secretariaat opgetrokken met alles erop en eraan.
Deze openvlakte diende vanzelfsprekend ook als start- en aankomstplaats. Om de lopers tijdens de wedstrijd te kunnen volgen, werd er dit jaar geen gebruik gemaakt van tvbeelden, maar lagen er wel 2 kijkposten op die zelfde vlakte.
Na een kleine vertraging, vanwege vele ploegaanpassingen, en nadat organisator-baanlegger Patrick Wallaert (in samenwerking met Bart Bos) zijn briefing gehouden had, verzamelden alle eerste lopers zich voor de massastart. Onder deze eerste lopers toch heel wat grote namen zoals Tom Herremans, Nicolas Silien, Bart Delobel, Dries VDK, Dries H, Jo Linten, Alain Mazy, Dirk Goossens, Ken Peeters, Dennis Ducro, Kim Wallaert,.. en nog vele anderen. Het zou wel eens een snel en spannend begin kunnen worden.

Na het startschot vetrokken een 160tal lopers over een lange baan in de richting van de eerste post. De ploegen die zich het snelst hadden ingeschreven, konden hier voordeel uit halen, want liepen vanaf het begin vooraan. Voor de laatst gestartten was het iets moeilijker om naar voor op te rukken. De jonge omegasken 'strechy Dennis' en Kim Wallaert wilden hun goed vormpeil graag tonen en liepen direct naar de kop. De eerste post, zeer verraderlijk vanwege de discutabele vegetatiegrens op kaart, zorgde al direct voor een eerste schifting. Iets later gingen ook de enthousiast vertrokken omegajongeren in de fout waardoor een trio (Tom Herremans, Jo linten en Christian Stoffels) als snelsten bij de eerste kijkpost arriveerden. Ze werden welliswaar op de voet gevolgd door het hele peleton aangevoerd door Wim Vervoort.
Na 30minuten (aan de tweede kijkpost) waren de kaarten wel helemaal anders geschud. Hier passeerde 'de Witte' als eerste met een ruime voorsprong op oa. Gunther Deferme, Pierre Blondiaux, Bart Delobel, Sam Deferm, Wim Vervoort, Dries van der Kleij, Ken Peeters, Christian Stoffels en Dries Heuninckx om de top10 volledig te maken. Aangezien er na de laatste kijkpost nog maar een klein lus van 800m, met nog wel een pittige helling incluis, moest afgelegd worden, zag de volgorde er aan de finish nagenoeg hetzelfde uit. Het was dus Tom Herremans die voor het 3e jaar op rij als eerste de aankomst overschreed.

Dan was het de beurt aan de 2e lopers; en hier veranderde op de eerste 6 posten al heel veel. Want aan de eerste kijkpost, na 10min, passeerde Fabien al als eerste (ondanks dat hij toch met 5min achterstand werd afgelost). Iets erna volgende een groepje met op kop de hammers Bart Mellebeek en Gery Delanghe met in hun zog Geert Simkens en de gebroeders Franssen.
Aan de finsih arriveerde Fabien met een toptijd van 32min (ondanks nog enkele foutjes) met ruime voorsprong op Geert Simkens en Bart Mellebeek.

De 3e loper van FRSO1 was de 60 jarige Rus S. Dmyterko. Al snel werd duidelijk dat deze veteraan niet opgewassen tegen het grote seniortelent Thomas van der Kleij. Deze laatste liep al bij al vlot naar de zege met wel meer als 6min voorsprong op de eerste militaire ploeg met als slotloper Francis Haex (die samen met Thomas gestart was). De tweede burgerploeg werd omega met als finisher Jochen Verdeyen die Frans Laenen (trol) klopte in een langgerekte sprint.

Conclusie: de grootste (militaire) aflossing van Belgie werd dus gewonnen door hamok. Zij konden eindelijk eens de titel behalen, na de vorige jaren telkens de letters 'disq' in de uitslag teruggevonden te hebben. Omega (met 2 juniors en Francois Jacobs in de ploeg) legde beslag op de 2e plaats, gevolgd door het winning team van vorig jaar trol. De Wisselbeker Rik Thijs werd uitgereikt aan de eerste militaire ploeg: 2/4L. De snelste tijd werd gelopen door Fabien Pasquasy (32min over 6.3km), en bij de H+40 door Guy Tirez (37min over 6.3km).
Verder ben ik er zeker van dat alle deelnemers genoten hebben van deze goed georganiseerde aflossing (ondanks dat de lekkere gratis spaghetti dit jaar ontbrak) en willen we hiervoor de organisatie nog eens bedanken!

Flemish Championship -Vlaams kampioenschap Gruitrode

This weekend there is another championship on the programme in Belgium: The Flemish (northern part of Belgium) championship.
The last 2 years the title was won by Bart Delobel, OMEGA. This year the race will be on one of the most beautiful maps from his club, Gruitroderbos.This map was used in 1997 for the JWOC Classic Distance. Simone Luder (no Niggli at that time J) won her first world title at this occasion. Johan Modig won the Mens. While Thierry Georgiou wasn’t so succesfull that day… you can see why on his website :

This year all the top 15 runners from the Flemish region are starting. Only Thomas van der Kleij and Joost Talloon will not be running. The best runners are starting the last so it will be an exciting race to watch! We are really looking forward to the performances of Tom Herremans and Wim Peers. They haven’t run a lot last year due to injuries. They will want to test their shape with a few more National Championships coming up soon.
Jan Gilot and P ieter Hendrickx are starting last and are the obvious favourites after their performances the last couple of weeks.

In the Women’s, Aline Hermans, the former n.1 from Belgian orienteering who had a baby recently, is on the start list. Whether she will effectively run or just go for a jog, we’ll have to wait and see. Furthermore, it will be exciting to see if Veerle Tulleneers and Kim Geypen will we able to come close to Greet Oeyen. Greet is again the favourite after her disappointing 2nd spot last week at the Belgian Long Distance Championship.

Dit weekend staat er alweer een kampioenschap op het programma. Het Vlaams Kampioenschap wordt sinds vorig jaar ook in september gelopen. De vorige 2 jaren ging de titel naar Bart Delobel, de vliegende omegask. Dit jaar wordt het kampioenschap gelopen op één van de mooiste kaarten van zijn club, nl. Gruitrode. Op deze kaart werd in 1997 het juniorenWK lange afstand gelopen. Simone Niggli-Luder behaalde hier haar eerste wereldtitel. Johan Modig won bij de mannen. Terwijl Thierry Georgiou ver achter bleef. Dit jaar komen alle toplopers van vlaanderen (top 15 van Belranking) aan de start op het Vlaams Kampioenschap. Alleen de jonge helden Thomas van der Kleij en Joost Talloen zullen er niet bij zijn. De organisator heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de besten als laatste starten. Het is vooral uitkijken naar het wederoptreden van Tom en Wim. Zij hebben het afgelopen jaar niet veel kunnen laten zien wegens blessureleed. Ze zullen hun vormpeil hier willen testen in aanloop naar de BK's die nog moeten komen. Jan en Pieter starten als laatsten en zijn dan ook de favorieten bij uitstek na hun prestaties van de afgelopen weken.

Bij de dames staat Aline Hermans op de startlijst, benieuwd of ze ook effectief zal starten. Verder is het uitkijken of Veerle Tulleneers of Kim Geypen in de buurt kunnen komen van Greet Oeyen die toch opnieuw favoriete is ondanks haar teleurstellende 2e plaats op het BK vorige zondag.

Belgian champion long distance tells his story...

Last sunday, Belgian Championships Long Distance took place in Louftemont. In men elite class Jan Gilot (Photo: Worldofo.com) won his first national title in this distance. After his excellent sprint result (22nd) at WOC in Denmark and his complete dominance during the '4 days of the Kempen' (Flanders, Belgium), Jan Gilot had to deal with the pressure to be the favourite... It was mentally a very tough week before the BC long distance cause everyone was pointing me as the big favorite and the one to beat. I kept in mind that if I made a technically very good race I would have a chance to win, because physically I'm not the strongest but I can make technically the difference in that kind of terrain. There were 3 important techniques I knew beforehand that they would decide about a perfect or far from perfect race: namely compass running, attacking point and read the map beforehand.The beginning of the race was as I expected: very technically demanding. At the second control I had some problem with to distinguish between green and white area on the map, but after a moment of looking around in the forest I knew at what I should pay attention during the whole race. The first hesitation was at the fourth control where I hit the track before I found the reantrance. I lost some 20 seconds there. At 6 the same story where I was too much to the north coming from the white area but I could relocate easily. To control 7 I decided to take the road all the way round to havethe chance to read the map beforehand. Arriving at 7 I knew what where the difficulties I would encounter till control 13. I think here I won therace because I only lost 15 seconds at the 10th control for going wrongfully around a bush and found the other controls without problems, where others lost a lot of time. To control 14 I did the same as for control 7, taking the road to read the map for the long leg (15-16). At control 14 Fabien Pasquasy came from behind me. He started 6 minutes before me but I had passed him during the first part of the race. We stayedtogether till the beginning of the long leg, however he pushed harder than I did on the road. I wanted to run at my own speed to keep the pace until the end and not being physically dead like V. Novikov on WOC long distance this year. So I decided to let him go and run my own race. At control 20 I did another small mistake by taking a doubtful attacking point, but towards the next control I won again some time by taking a good route choice. However I lost again some 20 second by being confused to see Fabien again and passed the control without seeing it. Towards the end I took a slower but secure route choice because I was feeling very tired. At the finish line Fabien picked some 2 minutes but not more and I was very satisfied with my race. I did what I had planned to do: to run a technically very good race and to keep on fighting till the end. I had to wait more than one and a half hour to be sure I had won my first belgian title on the long distance. As it is not my best distance, I'm very pleased with it. I was not physically the strongest (cfr. Pieter Hendrickx, Fabien Pasquasy) but I was definately technically the best. I want to thank BABA and Ivan Vis for the very nice designed map and race. I also want to congratulate Roger Casal with his strong run. As expected he did some 4 and a half minutes better than I. He is definately at a higher level than the Belgian orienteers.

O-Map Quality - Solution

After many events there is a discussion about the quality of the map. A map has to be strong and durable. It has to withstands extremely harsh treatment during orienteering competition. The colours have to be clear and details have to be readable.

There are several possibilities, but which one is the best price/quality solution?
you can make a distinction between different materials and different ways of printing.

Materials :

* Tyvek is a tough durable sheet of high-density polyethylene fibres. It is used in many scandinavian competitions. http://www.tyvek.com/mea/graphics/english/appl_maps-ex02.htm

* Normal paper (different thickness) - with plastic bag (different thickness)

* Pretex paper

* ...

Printing:

* Digital laser printing of O maps directly out of OCAD was used at the belgian championships. A very fast way of printing is possible. http://www.quickmap.sportsoftware.de/eng/home.html

* Process colour printing

* Spot colour printing

Spot colour uses a separate ink to print each colour of the map, which can allow accurate colour reproduction. Process colour reproduces a wide range of colors using just four standard inks, by combining the inks in varying proportions. When you want to reproduce photographs or other art with many colors, process colour is more economically feasible than spot colour, but not all colours can be reproduced accurately.

40e editie

Het Belgisch kampioenschap was dit jaar toe aan zijn 40e editie. Hieronder geven we een overzicht van alle winnaars in de elite-reeks.

Bij de vrouwen won Aline Hermans vier jaar op rij. Gisteren zorgde Véronique Bastin voor een 5de opéénvolgende overwinning voor ARDOC. Jan Gilot treedt in de voetsporen van clubgenoten Roel Reynders, Gerard Mooiman en Geert Simkens.

Het Belgisch kampioenschap lange afstand is en blijft de belangrijkste wedstrijd van het jaar. Het BK van de BK's zullen we maar zeggen. De club BABA had Iwan Vis en een mooie kaart, en dat resulteerde in technisch uitdagende en fysiek zware omlopen, zoals het hoort. Maar ook al de rest was tiptop in orde, ware het niet dat het weer een domper op de ambiance was.

Bij de mannen konden we niet van grote verassingen spreken. Jan Gilot toont al enkele weken zijn sterke vorm aan, en dat was vandaag niet anders. Gilot haalde Pasquasy in met zes minuten, op een derde wedstrijd. Na een op en over spelletje liep Pasquasy nog twee minuten weg van Gilot. Maar hij kon Jan Gilot niks meer maken. Pieter Hendrickx deed drie minuten trager dan Jan Gilot en nam daarmee de derde plaats. Pasquasy voorspelde een 15 plaats voor zich zelf. Delen we nu 15 door 5, dan zat hij er recht op.

Bij de vrouwen kunnen we wel van een verrassing spreken. Alles zag er naar uit dat Greet Oeyen haar eerste titel op deze afstand als senior zou nemen. Maar dat was buiten Veronique Bastin gerekend, die een ijzersterke wedstrijd liep, en Greet Oeyen op twee minuten zette. Muriel Vandermeulen werd derde.

The Belgian Championship Long Distance probably is the most important race of the year. The organizing club BABA had Ivan Vis as the course setter and a beautiful map, so we got to enjoy technically challenging and physically very tough courses, that’s the way it should be for a classic distance!
Only the weather wasn’t as good as we had hoped for…

Men elite – There were not any big mistakes in the Men’s race. Jan Gilot had been showing his great shape the last couple of weeks and it wasn’t any different today.
Gilot caught Pasquasy with 6 minutes, with two thirds of the course to go.
In the end Pasquasy managed to get 2 minutes away, but he couldn’t harm Gilot anymore.
Pieter Hendrickx was 3 minutes slower than Jan Gilot and settled for 2nd position.
Pasquasy had predicted a 15th spot for himself…. Well if you divide it by 5, he was spot on!

There were surprises in the women’s race. It was almost certain here that Greet Oeyen would win her first title in this distance as a senior, definitely with Aline Hermans not present after recently giving birth. But Veronique Bastin ran a fabulous race and was in the end 2 minutes in front of Greet Oeyen. Muriel Vandermeulen got third.

The race on Sunday was also a part of the “Coupe Latin’, a 4 races competition among teams from southern Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.Spanish runners Roger Casal and Esther Gil Brotons ran strong races in the Elite categories and both finished 1st in the international field

World Cup 2007 rules "new proposals"

As described in a previous article the number of runners allowed for a world cup is limited in 2007. For the best countries this means there are more runners allowed.But if you are not a top-22 country, only one runner is allowed to participate.
The ranking is based on the best 20 runners of each country. I wondered what the ranking would be if only 5 runners were taken into acount. So I made a calculation (only for the men).


At the left: old ranking (20 runners)
At the right: new ranking (5 runners)

A few countries made a large drop or climb in the ranking. And there is also a new leader: Switserland.

You can see that there is a clear top 3, subtop 4-9 and subsubtop 10-25. The new ranking is in my opinion more fair than the old one. Besides that I think all top 25 deserve at least 2 runners.
Maybe a reconsideration of the number of runners is also necessary: my proposal:
1-3 --> 10
4-6 --> 8
7-9 --> 7
10-15 --> 5
16-18 --> 4
19-21 --> 3
22-25 --> 2
I would like to know the opinion of athletes of all countries about this matter. Don't hesitate to post a comment.

To do the same for women, I think you should only take 3 or 4 women into acount to make a ranking.

Hendrickx op de cover

Pieter Hendrickx staat deze maand op de cover (foto) van het Zweedse o-magazine, Skogsport. Op de foto, genomen tijdens het WK, is hij te herkennen aan zijn paar snelle benen. De fotografen en camera's zijn spijtig genoeg niet op hem gericht, maar wel op de wereldkampioen Emil Wingstedt.

In een interessant artikel in dit nummer, komen de spannende minuten aan het licht na de aankomst van Ulricehamn in de Venla-aflossing(Jukola voor dames). De wedstrijd jury stond namelijk op het punt de winnende ploeg te disqualificeren.

Wat er gebeurde was dat Simone Niggli (foto) haar nummer van zich aftrok in de laatste rechte lijn. Ze deed dat om haar hoofdsponsor optimaal in het zicht te brengen.
Skogsport verteld dat er meerdere stemmen opgingen voor een disqualificatie in de jury, maar het eindigde met een aanmaning.


-Het was toch ook niet de bedoeling op vals te spelen of om tijd te winnen, zegt teammanager Henrik Erickson, die overigens alle schuld op zich neemt.
