Verslag Belgische kampioenschap aflossing

Zondag 23 september vond het Belgische kampioenschap aflossing plaats. Een nazomerzonnetje en uitdagende omlopen maakten er een mooie dag van.

Bij de heren waren het de KOL topfavorieten die de voorspellingen in werkelijkheid omzetten. Jan Gilot nam meteen de leiding. Zijn ploegmaten Geert Simkens en Pieter Hendrickx gaven deze leidersplaats niet meer uit handen. In tegendeel, hun voorsprong bleef groeien.
Na de volle 25.5 km hadden deze heren 16 minuten voorsprong op de jonge veulens van Hamok (Thomas en Jeroen Van der Kleij gekoppeld aan Jeroen Hoekx). De laatste podiumplaats werd veroverd door de Brusselaars Christophe Bernard, Jean-François Krier en Etienne Van Gasse. Hamok en Asub wisselen dus van positie tov de vorige editie (2006) in de Oostkantons. Een verrassend sterk Borasca, nochtans ook brons op Linkeroever in 2005, viel net van het podium.

Bij de dames werd er voornamelijk op Omega getypt.
Omega besliste om Miek Fabré naar de senioren te halen (waarschijnlijk kost dit hun een titel bij de dames junioren?). Miek kwam als eerste startloopster het bos uit gevolgd door Severine Vandermeulen en Saartje Sallaerts. Kim Geypen verloor deze pole position ten nadele van de relatief onbekende Stephanie Blockx. Een sterke Veerle Tulleneers kon geen tijd inhalen op Aline Hermans waardoor te titel voor CO Liege was.
Tweede werd dus omega, gevolgd door Hamok met Elien Melis, Elisabeth Schutjes en Greet Oeyen.

Preview: Belgian championship relay

Last sunday (16/09) the Flemish district championship middle distance took place in Ravels (map). In the resultslist (class H21elite) one club was rising above the others. So it's clear that KOL will be the big favourit during the national championship relay next sunday (23/09).

This competition will take place on the fast (flat), but challenging (with sand dunes and some tricky relief parts) map 'De Weyervlakte'. For example: in 2004 the Flemish championship was organised on this same map. That day the victory went to Bart Delobel, only one second faster than an other current elite runner Pieter Hendrickx. They both run 5'02min/km. Last year, also the national interclub championship was organised on the Weyervlakte. This time Jan Gilot was the best, he run 5'13min/km. So we can say for sure, that the winning team will need some physically strong runners. One of our strong runners, Fabien Pasquasy, wrote already his expectations about the relay on his website.

If we take a look at the Bel-ranking, it's obvious that KOL (Jan Gilot, Geert Simkens and Pieter Hendrickx) will be difficult to beat. The outsiders will be HAM OK (with the 2 brothers Thomas and Jeroen van der Kleij and their friend Jeroen Hoekx) and ASUB (Christophe Bernard, Etienne Van Gasse, Laurent Van Gasse/ J-B Colomb). The same top3 like last year. Maybe Pegase (with Johan Goubeau, Nicloas and Vincent Silien) can change something about it. But every competition needs to be run, and surprises are always possible.

In the W21elite class 'the unbeatable team' will be OMEGA with Miek Fabre, Veerle Tulleneers and Kim Geypen. Last year they won with a gap from 17 minutes. ASUB became 2nd and HERMA 3th.

Hopefully we can witness a thrilling fight in all classes (e.g. also in the junior and veterans-classes we expect some strong teams). Feel free to announce the composition of your teams in the comments.

Tijdens de septembermaand volgt de ene topwedstrijd de andere op. Vorige zondag werd er nog voor de Vlaamse titel middel afstand gestreden en dit weekend vindt dan weer het Belgisch kampioenschap aflossing plaats.

Deze wedstrijd vindt plaats in Hechtel op de kaart 'De weyervlakte'. Deze kaart kan in het algemeen toch omschreven worden als snel, hoewel we ervan overtuigd zijn dat baanlegger Jan Delobel de technische stukjes wel zal opzoeken en het toch nog opletten geblazen zal zijn.
Als we terug kijken naar het verleden, zien we dat Jan Gilot (tijdens het BK interclub 2006) een km-tijd neerzette van 5'13. Nog een jaar eerder werd op dit zelfde terrein het Vlaams kampioenschap georganiseerd. Toen was het Bart Delobel die net 1 seconde sneller aankwam dan Pieter Hendrickx. Beiden liepen tegen een km-tijd van 5'02! Dus de winnende ploeg zal zeker over fysiek sterke lopers moeten beschikken.
Een van onze fysiek sterkste lopers, Fabien Pasquasy, schreef al iets over de aflossing op zijn website. Hij beziet de aflossing dit jaar eerder als een doorgedreven training aangezien hij met HOC niet over een volwaardige ploeg beschikt. Volgend jaar daarentegen zal het BK aflossing een van z'n grote doelen worden, met de hulp van enkele Franse lopers (ook lid van HOC).

In de H21-senioren reeks kan er een trio als duidelijke favoriet worden aangeduid. Namelijk KOL (met Jan Gilot, Geert Simkens en Pieter Hendrickx) die ook vorig jaar al op het hoogste schavotje stonden. De grote uitdagers dit jaar worden opnieuw HAM OK (Jeroen Hoekx, Jeroen van der Kleij en Thomas van der Kleij) en ASUB (Etienne Van Gasse, Christophe Bernard en J-B Colomb/Laurent Van Gasse). Ook KOL2 (Thomas Hendrickx, Jo Linten en Tom Marien) en Pegase (eventueel met Nicolas Silien, Vincent Silien en Johan Goubeau) zullen niet te onderschatten zijn.

Ook bij de vrouwen is er 1 'onklopbare' ploeg. Vorig jaar behaalde OMEGA hier de zege met Miek Fabre, Veerle Tulleneers en Kim Geypen. In 2006 werden werden ASUB en Herma respectievelijk 2e en 3e.

In de andere reeksen gaan ook nog heel wat sterke teams van start, zo zijn we ook benieuwd wie er bij de beloften, junioren en veteranen met de titel gaat lopen dit jaar.

Bij de commentaren zullen we zoveel mogelijk samenstellingen van de teams posten. Het zou natuurlijk vriendelijk zijn als de lezers deze ploegen wat verder kunnen aanvullen en juiste samenstellingen doorgeven.

Do I have to visit the start flag or not?

In short: no.

Thanks to our guest author Walter Van Krunckelsven we know the slightly longer explanation by David Rosen, chairman of the IOF rules commission:

"The fact is that once the runner has crossed the start line, he/she is only concerned with getting to control 1 as quickly as possible.

If the organiser wishes the runner to visit the start flag which is some way off, then the organiser must make it completely clear e.g. by making a taped corridor with "uncrossable" ribbons on both side.

I don't believe that you can penalize a runner for going directly to the first control and (as you say) there is nothing in the rules to say clearly that a runner must visit the start banner. It is simply up to the organiser/planner to arrange the start (and the direction of the first control) so that the runners will naturally visit the start flag."

Naar de startbalise of niet?

Als gevolg van de discussies na het Vlaams Kampioenschap Aflossing en het Belgisch Kampioenschap lange afstand rond het feit of men nu al dan niet tot aan de startbalise moet gaan ben ik eens gaan rondneuzen naar een duidelijk antwoord. In de IOF rules vond ik niet direct iets terug dus heb ik maar David Rosen (voorzitter van de IOF reglementen commissie) aangeschreven.

Hierbij zijn antwoord:

Belgian JEC team announced

This week, the junior coaches decided that 12 Belgian juniors are selected to take part in JEC near Millau (FR) thanks to their performances at the Belgian long distance championships:

De Laatste Post scouted the area this summer:

The Dourbie Canyon, in which Nant, the village hosting the event, is situated. Good observers can see the enormous viaduct of Millau in the background.

The 14th century "Pont de la Prade" in Nant, as seen from the "Chapelle du Claux", indicated by the Michelin guide as one of the best views on the bridge. The competitors in the sprint race will have to pass this bridge.

The numerous small passages in the village will certainly make even the sprint event in the city difficult.

We are looking forward to some good performances by our talented group of runners. The results during O-ringen and local races were certainly showing that the team is getting ready for their main goal, JWOC 2008 and we hope they will also show their good shape at JEC.

Anyway, we read that this will be the last JEC, anyone with more information?

Relay Rik Thijs

Yesterday the biggest relay in Belgium took place. Nearly 400 runners participated during the relay Rik Thijs. The results, map and pictures are visible below.

The organisation was nearly perfect: the spectators had the possibility to follow the competition by speaker, radiocontrol, tv-screen, spectatorscontrol and change-over-area. Also the map was good: pretty technical and challenging. So, this time no complaints afterwards, we guess.

Best military team: 2/4 L (Serge Baert - Geert Simkens - Francis Haex)

Gisteren, woensdag 12 september, was het net over de grens verzamelen geblazen voor de grootste Belgische aflossing, nl Rik Thijs. Het waren uiteraard vooral militairen, gepensioneerden, studenten en enkele uitzonderingen die verlof konden nemen, die present tekenden. Uiteindelijk waren er 130 ploegen (bestaande uit telkens 3 lopers) die aan de start verschenen.
De wedstrijd zelf was weer prachtig georganiseerd. Zo werden de toeschouwers op de hoogte gehouden via een radiopost, een tv-scherm, kijkpost, aflossingszone en een speaker. Een luxe om zo'n aflossingswedstrijd te volgen.
Ook over de kaart en baanlegging viel niet te klagen. De zwarte bergen zorgde voor een uitdagend en afwisselend terrein. Vrij snel, maar toch moeilijk om foutloos door te komen. De kaart is ondertussen terug te vinden op de link onderaan.

Volgend jaar zal de 17e editie plaats vinden op de kaart Gruitrodebos in de maand oktober. Benieuwd of Patrick Wallaert met steun van het leger er weer zo'n geslaagde dag van gaat maken.

Wedstrijdverloop:
Door een lange voorstart (om via de camping het bos te bereiken) werd het peleton direct op een lijn getrokken. Het waren de fysiek sterke loper zoals Thorsten Langer die in het begin het tempo aanvoerden. Via de radiopost (na ongeveer 2km wedstrijd) werd meegedeeld dat Jeroen Hoekx in eerste positie lag. Hij werd gevolgd door een nog vrij omvangrijke groep met oa. Jan Gilot, Bart Delobel, Gunther Deferme, Kim Wallaert, Frans Laenen en nog enkele anderen.
Uiteraard begonnen er na verloop van tijd meer gaten te vallen en werden de verschillen groter. In extremis waren het Jan Gilot en Bart Delobel die een sterke Jeroen Hoekx nog gepasseerd hadden. Als 4e volgde Paul Goossens en Serge Baert vervolledigde de top5.

Bij de 2e lopers werd de schifting verder gevoerd. Geert Simkens (2/4L) kon het gat op Jeroen van der Kleij (Ham ok) dichtlopen, en samen liepen ze een degelijke wedstrijd. Ze konden hun voorsprong op trol (Winston Franssen) vergroten tot 6min. Omega (Sooi Jacobs) volgde op 8min en de 5e ploeg 6GPCIS (met Philippe Boedt) zelfs al op 12min.

Het waren dus Bart Mellebeek en Francis Haex die onderling mochten uitmaken wie deze 16e editie van de wisselbeker rik thijs op zen palmares mocht bijschrijven. Bart Mellebeek van HamOK ging het duel alleszins met volle vertrouwen aan, want met grote woorden had hij de overwinning op voorhand aangekondigd. Maar wat zegt het spreekwoord, Bart? Hoogmoed komt voor de val? En zo geschiedde uiteindelijk ook, aan de radiopost na 2km verloor hij door enkele fouten reeds 6min. Uiteindelijk eindigde Hamok op de 3e plaats, als 2e burgerploeg. Desmond Franssen liep ondertussen met Trol naar de 2e plaats en 1e burgerploeg. Francis Haex hield nog een ruime marge van 3min over en zo won nog eens een militaire ploeg de volledige aflossing. Proficiat!

Jan Gilots route choices to the Belgian title

Belgian Championship Long distance

Yesterday the Belgian championship long distance took place in Brasschaat.
In a previous article it was and is still possible to read a short report of the event.
Like mentioned before, Jan Gilot took his second victory in row.
He told us that he took the victory by making the least mistakes. This was the difference with his closest competitors, who run a faster time without mistakes (winsplits).

In that same 'previous article we could read that some runners explained a bad race because of the map. But maybe the doubts about the map are not the only reason for the orienteeringmistakes.
I remember that Fabien Pasquasy told exactly the same comment ("I won the national championship because I made the least mistakes") after his victory two years ago in Masy. The map of Masy was drawn by the Oekrainian top drawer Orest Kotylo and everybody did agree that the map was perfect.
Maybe the average Belgian map is not challenging enough and these mistakes are caused by a tough and more technical race like yesterday instead of a wrong map.


JEC Selection
Also the Junior European Championship selections took place yesterday.
Due to the far trip to Australia, it is the only opportunity to run an important junior event in 2007 for the Flemish juniors.
The selection is limited to 4 runners in each class (M18, W18, M20 and W20).

Following runners are theoretical and unofficial selected (also taking in count the km times of the mens class):
M18: Leeuws Wouter, Genar Jeremy, De Neyer Gilles and Pelckmans Adriaan.
W18: Henkes Elisabeth
M20: Goubau Johan, Claes Gert, Wallaert Kim and Vandemeulebroek Félix
W20: Fabré Miek, Sallaerts Saartje and Melis Elien.

It is still an unofficial selection. ABSO/BVOS and VVO/FRSO still have to confirm their selection . But those youngsters can raise their trainingsintensity to perform well in France.

Jan Gilot Belgian champion long distance

Last week, De Laatste Post headlined: "Gilot and Hendrickx are the favourites", after Fabien Pasquasy said so in his blog. It turns out that Fabien was quite right as Jan Gilot (KOL) managed to win the Belgian long distance championship, held in Brasschaat, Antwerp on the map "Klein Schietveld".

Gilot, also last year's winner, managed to keep his total time lost in mistakes to a minimum, yet he still made two two-minute mistakes. No-one of the top runners had a clean run in the Elite categories, partially because the high grass made the course into a tough challenge, but we also heard complaints about the map and the placing of the controls.

Follow-up runners in the standings were Etienne Van Gasse (Asub) and Pieter Hendrickx (KOL), Van Gasse being 1:28 behind and Hendrickx 2:07, with Fabien Pasquasy finishing just 2 seconds behind him on the fourth spot.

In the women's category, we have Veerle Tulleneers (Omega) in first position, in front of Aline Hermans (CO Liège) and Greet Oeyen (hamok). Again, no-one managed to run a clean race, with quite a few mistakes for Tulleneers too, but still less than the 5-minute mistake towards control 3 by Aline Hermans, after a fast paced start.

The junior categories were won by Wouter Leeuws (H-18), Johan Goubau (H-20), Elisabeth Henkes (D-18) and Miek Fabré (D-20). This race was the selection race for JEC in Millau (FR), we'll post the team as soon as it's officially announced.

It is definitely worth the time to compare this year's edition of the map to the 2001 version, as posted in our previous article, as the grassland to the north of the start has a far more detailed vegetation in the older version than in the newer one. Also the organizers might want to consult the sports rules (PDF) of the Belgian federation and more specifically item 14.6.

"Gilot en Hendrickx zijn de favorieten"

Vijf dagen voor het BK probeert Fabien Pasquasy de druk bij zijn concurenten te leggen.

"My favourite are Jan Gilot and Pieter Hendrickx from KOL. They have both enough experience to win in such terrain. I have probably not enough speed right now to challenge them in that terrain."

Jan Gilot en Pieter Hendrickx zijn zeker grote favorieten voor komende zondag. Maar de top favoriet is en blijft Fabien Pasquasy.

Flemish Relay Championship

Today, the Flemish Relay Championship was held in Leopoldsburg. Teams of three runners, where each runner has a certain number of points, according to the age of the runner, and a team has no more than 46 points. You could already find the teams in our previous post on subject.

The favourites before the start were: the TROL team with Jeremy Genar and Frans Laenen and Michel Wens, the hamok team with Jeroen van der Kleij, Bart Mellebeek and Georges Deferme and the two KOL teams around Pieter Hendrickx and Jan Gilot, with Yannick Michiels. Outsiders were Omega with Kim Wallaert, François Jacobs and Elisabeth Henkes.

The first leg was not all that deciding, with the fastest runners mostly on the third leg, yet still a lot of fast runners ready to storm into the forest. The start took place in an open field and some runners did not deem it necessary to go to the start flag as you can see in the following picture. The same runner also decided to not take the obligational crossing point to the last control, evading a sprint with Fons Bosch (TROL), but instead jumping over a wooden fence, which was forbidden.

During the first leg, lots of mistakes were made and this resulted in two slightly older runners to arrive in the first spots, Roger Hendrickx (KOL-H50) and Bart Mellebeek (hamok-H40). Hendrickx was the first runner of the team of favourites with Pieter Hendrickx and second runner Leon Ceunen, but sadly for the spectators, he mispunched a control. The other KOL team, with Yannick Michiels starting, suffered the same fate. This meant two important teams out of the race, already after the first runner.

Now we had Georges Deferme of hamok in the virtual lead, but success managed to evade him this year as he did not run a very good race and was passed by both Michel Wens of TROL and Elisabeth Henkes of Omega, subject of one of the most controversial transfers last year, but it seems to pay off. In fact, Deferme arrived only in fifth position as he was also passed by Kim Geypen of Omega and Jos Thijs of hamok.

Now we had Jeremy Genar (photo) as the leading runner, with quite a large gap to François Jacobs. Genar is currently in a very good shape, with the important championships coming next weeks and JEC in Millau (FR) not that far off, it was no surprise that he managed to widen the gap. It was more surprising though that at the spectator control, after 8 minutes wait, it was not the Omega team arriving first, but the already disqualified team of KOL with Pieter Hendrickx, followed shortly by hamok with Jeroen van der Kleij.

Genar was able to hold the lead and took the prestigious trophy with him to his training domain in Tielen. The second runner was the disqualified Pieter Hendrickx, but in the end it was not hamok that took the second spot, but Omega, with hamok-runner van der Kleij having misread a control number and searching for another control for more than two minutes before realizing that he had already been at the control (this happened to more runners today). It is not uncommon to have problems like that in a relay, where it's hard to keep your visible map area small enough while still being able to find and read your control description in a fast enough time. Printing the control numbers after the actual control would be better perhaps, like 12-103 for example.

There was also a family competition, all three spots there were taken by Omega teams, with the Leeuws/Wouters family in first position, van de Moortel second and Verdeyen third. Overall, it was another fine event, but it might be worth visiting the hamok technical area for a quick reintroduction to orienteering after all these mistakes today.

Latin Cup: map sprint + long

Below the map of the sprint race is visible. We still didn't find any results, we only heard that the Belgian team didn't run great. But Astrid Bastin did a better run than yesterday and became 3th in D18E.

Resuts and map Latin Cup: middle distance

Yesterday the Latin Cup started. It's a competition between several countries like Belgium (the south), Spain, Italy, Romania, Moldavia and Portugal. Last year (2006) the competition took place in Belgium. Here, France was also one of the participating countries, but this year (in Romania) they are absent. On Friday they run middle distance, on saturday sprint distance and finally on sunday long distance.

Map H21E: 6.5km and 300m climbing.

Results

The Italian team travelled by car and had to drive 14 houres. But the results weren't bad: Roberto Dallavalle (H18E), Nicole Scalet (W18E, also present at JWOC and oringen, running for Linköpings) and Giancarlo Simion (H20E, and a good friend from our 'delaatstepost'-member Elien Melis, as you can see on the photo) took the victory. They are in the lead together with Romania. Belgium took 3 2nd places and is now 4th in the overall-ranking. Only Portugal was slower.

The Belgian team: Corentin Tonneau (H20E), Astrid Bastin (D18E), Christophe Bernard (H21E), Severine Vandermeulen (D21E), Gilles De Neyer (H18E) and Katharina Henkes (D20E).
