Team Melis/Talloen wins Jenever Relay

Yesterday evening, in an exciting race in the Arenbergpark (Leuven), Joost Talloen and Elien Melis proved once again that they mastered the skills required to call themselves student and orienteer at the same time.

On paper, it was clear that their team was the fastest, but since there was forking in the relay, Elien Melis had a handicap to the other runners, since she was given a longer course.

Each runner had to run three loops and before each loop, they had to drink one glass of Jenever, except for the last tour, where two glasses had to be consumed. It was also allowed and even encouraged to drink during the waiting periods of course.

Since teams consisted of one experienced runner and one/two coming talents, lots of good runners started in the mass start. The fastest runner of the first leg was Jeroen van der Kleij. He started off slowly, making sure others found controls in front of him, but used his superior knowledgde of the terrain to pass the other competitors on the way to the last control. His teammates Jolien and Annelies were the first to start, followed by the teammates of other runners like (in no particular order) Joost Talloen, Peter Krampiltz, Desmond Franssen, Winston Franssen, Bruno De Lat and Bart Mellebeek. Jos Thijs and especially Jef Boeckx lost some time for their follow-up runners.

On the first leg of the second runners, we saw that Elien Melis ran really fast, arriving right in front of the pack.

The second leg was deciding: Joost Talloen managed to get away from the others and had a two-minute lead to them. Melis and Talloen were able to secure that lead for the rest of the race. The battle for second place was harder, but finally won by Jeroen van der Kleij, together with Jolien Hoekx and Annelies ? . On third place, we see Bart Mellebeek, with his teammates Hans De Clercq and Sam Kayaert. The last four second runners had never run an o-race before, yet they still managed good times at night in the forest, holding off more experienced runners.

Samenkomst jeneveraflossing

Op onderstaand kaartfragment is met een zwarte pijl het gebouw 'De Bar' aangeduid. Hier zal de verzamelplaats zijn van de jeneveraflossing dinsdag (30 oktober). Start wordt gegeven om 18u30, dus vanaf 18u is iedereen welkom! De ingang bevindt zich in de grijze zone van het gebouw op de kaart.

Preview Jeneveraflossing

(English below) Op dinsdag 30 oktober vindt naar jaarlijkse gewoonte weer de slok jeneveraflossing plaats, ook wel de 'Memorial Sofie Herremans' genaamd. Ook dit jaar weer, zal het Arenbergpark de 'place to be' zijn. We verwachten verschillende ploegjes aan de start die worden samengesteld uit 2 lo(o)p(st)ers, een combinatie van een ervaren orienteur met een opkomend talent. Dit opkomend talent kan ook altijd uit een duo of trio bestaan, die dan samen de omloop zullen afleggen.

De lopers zullen elk 3 korte parcourtjes (1 a 1,5km) moeten lopen, steeds vooraf gegaan door 1 of 2 shotjes jenever. De ploeg die als eerste alle drankjes leeg heeft en de omlopen juist afgelegd heeft, zal tot uiteindelijke winnaar worden uitgeroepen.

Dit jaar verschenen er heel wat talenten uit de slokvijver op de trainingen, soms zelfs tot 40 deelnemers. Hun coaches Jeroen Hoekx en Thomas van der Kleij zorgden elke dinsdagavond voor technische trainingen op ieders niveau (van gewone IOF tot orohydro- en vensteromlopen). Vorige dinsdag werd er zelfs op micro-orientatie getraind ter voorbereiding van de Orient-show. De uitslagen en foto's van deze trainingen zijn terug te vinden op de slok-website. Ook de kalender wordt steeds aangepast, zodat jullie alle recreatieve- en elitetrainingen op de voet kunnen volgen.

Dit jaar werd er ook rekening mee gehouden dat de aflossing plaats heeft tijdens de herfstvakantie. Zodat er hopelijk ook nog studenten of andere geïnteresseerde lopers van buiten Leuven aan deze activiteit kunnen deelnemen.

On tuesday (30/10), SLOK (orienteering students in Leuven) will organise a jeneverrelay. Every runner will run 3 times, each time a different track. Before receiving your map you have to drink a jenever (3 times too).

The start will take place at 18.30, so it will be dark already. Taking an illumination equipment with you, can be usefull.

We invite everyone to join this competition, especially the students from the south of Belgium.

Wegkeuzes in Meerdaalwoud

Tijdens de MTBO-wedstrijd in meerdaalwoud waren er heel wat intressante wegkeuzes. De nummer 1 en 2 van de langste omloop, Sam Deferm en Roel Smolders, tekenden hun kaart in voor ons en gaven commentaar. Ze namen heel wat verschillende keuzes, maar finishten toch maar 2 minuten uit elkaar.

Sam Deferm: "Ik nam een volledig foutieve wegkeuze voor been 4-5 en naar post 13 neem ik verkeerde weg downhill."


Roel Smolders: "Over het algemeen weinig fouten gemaakt denk ik, alleen aan CP 15 heb ik zeker 5 minuten verspeeld omdat ik die niet vond. De post hing wel juist, maar ik vond dat de kaart daar niet klopte met de omgeving, en was daarom in de war geraakt."

24.350 Euro Prizemoney for Simone Niggli!

Simone Niggli-Luder is leading our Top 20 Prizemoney winners List 2007 .

Simone Niggli-Luder won € 24.350 this year. That' almost the same as all the other girls in the field together. Though, this is very little compared to the number one in tennis for example (Justine Henin: € 3.003.435 so far this year). Niggli won the jackpost in both Champs Meeting, O-ringen and Elitserien.

Thierry Gueorgiou, the first man on the list, won € 11.500. Gueorgiou won all the World Cup races he participated in, but still it's only € 1.000 down to Anders Nordberg. Nordberg won the O-ringen and lately the Ragnar Weums ærespris, for the best Blodslitet-result over 3 years.

Hendrickx and Tulleneers in leagues final

Not Pieter Hendrikcx won todays final in the national league, but his brother Tomas was the quickest. Fast running and perfect control taking was the key to win todays race. In this middle distance with lots of direction changing he was 40 seconds faster than Jeroen van der Kleij. Early starting, and top favourite, Pieter Hendrickx could only finish in third spot. He did not match his top speed and made some smaller mistakes. Alain Mazy lost the thirth position by only 3 seconds. His increasing form the last months has definatly led to a nice result.

Veerle Tulleneers revenched after last weeks collapse in the sprint champs. She turned a ninth spot there, into a victory in todays middle distance. With a very small margin, Aline Hermans became second. Kim Geypen finished in third spot, 3 minutes behind.

Mountainbikeoriëntatie in Meerdaalwoud

De mountainbikeoriëntatie in het Meerdaalwoud vond vandaag plaats. Het was niet echt warm, maar de mooie blauwe lucht en de prachtige kleuren van een bos in de herfst maakten de al dan niet lange fietstocht een unieke ervaring voor de talrijk (44) opgekomen deelnemers. Die deelnemers werden dan ook erg verwend door baanlegger Jef Boeckx op de herverkende kaart.

De snelste deelnemer in de A-omloop was Sam Deferm, hij was een tweetal minuten sneller dan Roel Smolders, die genoegen moest nemen met de tweede plaats. Op de derde plaats zien we Alain Wathelet, op een kleine tien minuten van Deferm.

In de B-omloop was Greet Oeyen de snelste, met een ruime voorsprong op de achtervolgers (Timmermans, Van Briel), die met enkelen dicht bijeen eindigden. De matig bezette C-omloop werd gewonnen door Ria Verwimp, 10 seconden sneller dan dichtste achtervolger Robert Hoofd.

Omega wins Night Relay

Today, at the domain of De Kluis, part of the larger Meerdaalwoud, the Flemish night relay championship took place. As usual in relays, the race was exciting to watch, with surprises until the finish.

Huge favourites for the victory today were Trol 1 (Laenen, Vervoort, D. Franssen). Trol won last year's event, although the team was quite different now. They did not make it, after a pretty bad start from Laenen and finally ended fifth.

Thanks to the small domain, course setter Miek Fabré could show the masses of spectators a lot of runner passages: two already for the starting runners. The mass start had a lot of good runners in it. At the first passage, Bart Mellebeek of hamok 3 was in the lead, a few seconds ahead of Borasca 1 with Jan Oeyen, Kol 2 with Bruno De Lat, Omega 6 with Bart Delobel and hamok 2 with Thomas van der Kleij. The picture changed at the second passage, where van der Kleij took the lead, followed closely by Oeyen. That was also the order in which the runners arrived at the finish.

Borasca's team had Anita Baerts as a second runner and she was quickly passed by hamok's Marc Hermans. Not that far behind was Bart Van de Moortel (Omega) and by the spectator control, it was Van de Moortel who was leading the pack (of two runners, that is). Although Hermans was quite satisfied with his performance:

I did not run as fast as this in daylight this year

, he had to settle for second place.

The race seemed to be over then, as it would be strange if hamok's Luc Cloostermans could close in on Roel Van de Moortel, who was now in the forest for Omega, and indeed, at the spectator control, Omega had a steady lead by now. Surprisingly, the second team was not hamok, but it was Wannes Hendrickx, for Kol 1, who sneaked into second place. Cloostermans arrived shortly thereafter, but could not close the gap anymore. He even had to let team Asub pass him, so the third place was for Asub. Hamok ended fourth, and as already mentioned, it was Trol that arrived in fifth position.

We are still waiting for the new special rules for WCUP 2008 to be released. But probably the ranking of the countries will decide how many runners can participate at the World Cup.

Therefor I wanted to have a look at this ranking, but the link of this "federation league table" at the website of IOF shows us this strange picture…

I wonder what this means.

Last year we had this ranking:

I created a ranking of this moment. Switzerland is on top now, Finland in 2nd and Sweden is back in 3th place. Russia is only in 17th spot. This means in next world cup will be only 5 russians.

Belgium is in 23 th spot. They can however still improve with the last WRE of the year. This WRE is in the sandy dunes of Flanders where JWOC 1997 took place.

This last WRE of the season could be the First warming up for next season.

Gilot wins again.

At the end of an exciting race in the Belgian Sprint championship in Marche-en-Famenne, Jan Gilot (KOL) showed again that he is the man to beat this autumn. He won by a small margin to Fabien Pasquasy (HOC). At the spectator control, Pasquasy still had a lead of 10 seconds, but the final part of the course had some surprises for him. Last year's Belgian champion Pieter Hendrickx (KOL), had to settle for third place.

In the DE class, Aline Hermans of CO Liège won, also by a small margin to Kim Geypen (Omega). In third place, with more time difference, there was Severine Vandermeulen (also CO Liège).

Today's event by Balise 10 has set an example for future sprint championships (in Belgium, that is). Results for the spectators at the spectators control and a speaker in both Dutch and French, together with the magnificent weather made it a very enjoyable stay in Marche. Junior European Cup

The Belgian junior team arrived in France without any problems. Only Adriaan Pelckmans stayed at home because he's ill. Today the sprint distance will take place in the village (20%) and surrounding(80%) of Nant (on a plateau with lots of fields, stones and walls). The juniors are grouped in 4 classes: W18 (2,2km), M18 (2,6km), W20(2,2km) and M20 (2,6km). The distance will be the same, but runners18 and runners20 will have different courses. Tommorow the athletes will run a long distance close to Cornus, and on sunday the relay (combined 18's and 20's) will take place in this same area.
If we take a look at the startlist, especially Norway has a strong team. In the past they often run with unknown runners, but this time they selected a good team. They even trained already 4 days in Clermont-Ferrand last days. Also Danmark, Czech Republic, France and Russia have some strong runners in their team. In total 15 nations will participate in this European Championship under-20.
At the same time and same place, the O-Larzac takes place. So other famous runners like Thierry Gueorgiou, Damien Renard, Francois Gonon, Rasmus Djurhuus, Capucine Vercellotti and Celine Dodin will run on these maps too. (Map Modelevent)

Senioren - juniorenploeg: tijd om in te schrijven voor volgend jaar!!

Dit weekend staat de laatste belangrijke wedstrijd van het seizoen op het programma.

Een delegatie juniors trekt eropuit naar de JEC in Frankrijk en voor de senioren staat het BK Sprint op het programma.
Daarna wordt het misschien tijd om de loopschoenen even aan de haak te hangen na een vermoeiend seizoen.

Opgelet echter, wil je volgend jaar weer deel uitmaken van de ploeg, Vergeet jullie dan niet in te schrijven!!!bij VVO en de juniorentrainer Stefan Thiels of seniorentrainer Rogier Vanaken.
Dit moet gebeuren voor 30 oktober.

MTB-O Meerdaalwoud gaat door!

De eerder van de kalender verdwenen mountainbike oriëntatiecross in het Meerdaalwoud gaat toch door. Lobbyman en organisator Jef Boeckx kon het zelf niet geloven:

het wonder is geschied, de MTB O op Meerdaal is goedgekeurd. Telefonisch ben ik op de hoogte gebracht, eerstdaags zou ik ook
schriftelijke bevestiging ontvangen.

• Samenkomst: Cafe "In de Molen" aan de Zoete Waters.
• Start tussen 10u en 12u.

's Vrijdags is het nachtaflossing op De Kluis. De Kluis is het meest westelijke puntje van de mountainbikekaart. De avontuurlijk aangelegde o-loper kan een kampeerplaatsje zoeken in de buurt. De camping aan de Zoete Waters is maar enkele meters van het wedstrijdcentrum vandaan. Dichtbij schijnt een middelgrote stad te zijn, waar ze terrasjes hebben om op uw overwinning te drinken. Het opzetten van tenten op de oude markt is wel verboden.

Surprises in the Sahara

The fourth Belgian national event took place under a totally blue sky on the fine map of the Sahara in Lommel. The terrain consists of sand dunes, very good runnable forest and a dense network of paths. It was expected that the winning times would be around or even under 5mins/km. Not so this time. Even though the terrain was just as fast as the race there at roughly the same time last year, hardly anyone could pull off a clean race, and certainly not in the elite categories. KOL course setters Stefan Vreys and Paul Goossens did their job well and people enjoyed their time in the forest (no map yet, sorry).

To be able to read the contours and the paths, the map scale was 1/7500, even though the event was a regular long distance race. This was actually not that bad and made it fun to orienteer through the dunes.

Because of the WC final, some good runners were absent, but it was still expected that both Pieter Hendrickx and Jan Gilot (KOL) would show the others what orienteering in Flanders was. Afterwards, Hendrickx said he was not motivated for the race and he would only try to load up for the sprint championships coming weekend. Gilot did run better (13 seconds behind on the second place), but he had a though preparation last week, both physically and mentally.

The winner, however, was Nicolas Sillien (CO Pégase), perhaps best known for his running speed (some say even faster than Fabien Pasquasy), but also for his ability to make huge mistakes. He managed to make only 3 minutes of mistakes and the fast running speed was enough to claim the victory. Third place Bart Delobel (Omega), said he was still recovering from a military half marathon and preparing for the Belgian mountain running champs this week, so he did not run fast. The splits suggest otherwise. Just a few controls before the finish, both Gilot and Delobel were more than a minute in front of Sillien, but they lost a lot of time in the difficult zone near the finish.

Juniors Jeremy Genar and Wouter Leeuws also participated in the HE category, as a final test for JEC. They finished 7th and 8th, some 4 minutes behind on the winner, quite good though, because they thought the distance would be too far for them.

In the women's class, Veerle Tulleneers won by a small margin of only 9 seconds to her clubmate of Omega, Kim Geypen. Geypen, however, again met H40 runner Bart Mellebeek in the forest, but managed to finish in front of him. It suffices to take a look at the splits. We won't quote Mellebeek's comment from the Relay championships.

In third spot, there was junior Elien Melis (hamok), back in good shape, right on time for JEC. She was satisfied with her result and will be ready for the junior's departure on thursday.

World Cup final round - Belgen

Dit weekend vindt in de buurt van het Zwitserse Stein Am Rhein de laatste ronde van de World Cup plaats.Ons landje word afgevaardigd door volgende atleten:

Vandaag werd er al een Middle Distance gelopen en deze werd, niet verrassend, gewonnen door Thierry Gueorgiou en Simone Niggli-Luder

Hiermee verzekerden Thierry en Simone zich ook van een eindoverwinning in het World Cup klassement.
De splits zijn zeker de moeite om eens te bekijken.

De prestaties van de Belgen waren niet echt super. Misschien ook wel het gevolg van een erg lang seizoen.Hoewel enkel Fabien er al een 'internationaal' seizoen heeft opzitten natuurlijk.
De Zweden presteerden ook ondermaats op deze wedstrijd en kloegen over een te lang seizoen.
Vele elite-atleten lieten de afgelopen weken trouwens opmeten in hun blogs moeite te hebben gehad met het opladen na het Wereldkampioenschap.

Simone Niggli-Luder had hier weinig last van blijkbaar, en vertelde dat het niet moeilijk was om zich hier nog voor op te laden aangezien er veel supporters voor haar stonden.


Morgen namiddag staat er een sprint op het programma in het centrum van Stein am Rhein, nl de PostFinance Sprint, genoemd naar de belangrijkste sponsor van dit event.

Aan deze wedstrijd mogen slechts 40 lopers deelnemen (een gevolg van de nieuwe World CUp rules), vandaar dat we Thomas niet aan de start zien verschijnen . (Hij heeft immers nog geen World Cup ranking en kan dus onmogelijk opgevist worden).

Misschien dat deze sprint de Belgen beter zal liggen?

Zo stond de Park World Tour jarenlang garant voor de promotie van een (toen nog) nieuwe discipline, namelijk sprint-orientatie. Tien jaar later is sprint-orientatie niet meer weg te denken uit het aanbod. Sinds enkele jaren maakt het ook deel uit van het WK programma.

Park World Tour vond dit ten koste gaan van de lange ol wedstrijden en zette voor het seizoen 2007 enkel Blodslitet in Fredrikstad op zijn programma. Blodslitet is de Noorse ultralange afsluiter van het seizoen. De lopers worden door middel van een massastart voor zo'n 25 km het bos in gestuurd. Park World Tour zet zich duidelijk achter dit soort voorhistorische wedstrijden.

Ook dit weekend vond er een dergelijke ultralange OL wedstrijd plaats in Noorwegen. De studentenclub NTNUI organiseerde Hu&Hei 2007 nabij Trondheim. Bij deze wedstrijd wordt er niet in massa gestart. Ander verschil tov Blodslitet is de afstand. Zo kregen ze deelnemers hier zelfs 32 (voor de heren) en 18km (voor de dames) voorgeschoteld. De zeges gingen uiteindelijk naar de Fin Tuomas Tervo en de Noorse thuisloopster Lene Bergersen.

Resultaten Hu&Hei 2007

Ook een landgenoot plande om deel te nemen. Helaas besliste een ziekte met bijhorende antibioticakuur er anders over. Omegaan Dennis Ducro bevindt zich sinds einde juli in Noorwegen. Al zijn reisverhalen zijn terug te vinden op Dennis zijn blog.

Ook Troller Wiet (Frans) Laenen en zijn compagnon Wim Vervoort smeden weer wilde plannen. Zo willen de twee kempenboys in 2008 deelnemen aan het WK scoreloop in Estland. De tijd waarbinnen de heren op zoek moeten gaan naar zoveel mogelijk posten bedraagt maar liefst 24h. Deelnemen mag in groepen van 2 tot 5 lopers (voorwaarde is wel dat men steeds in groep blijft). Omdat de exacte naam van dit evenement me ontsnapt kan ik jullie geen link meegeven.
