Bike&Run 2008

Preview tiomila 2008

On april 26 and 27th, the most famous orienteering relay in the world will take place in Sigtuna (Sweden). In the mens class every team exists out of 10 runners, who will run 100km in total. The 2 longest legs, the 4th (16,5km) and 10th (17,5km), are not forked.

It's difficult to say who will win tiomila 2008. The top3 from last year are favourits again for sure. The winner Halden SK lost their star Mats Haldin, but Anders Nordberg is a good replacement. Emil Wingstedt will be the finisher in this team. Last year Vaajakosken Terä (with Pasi Ikonen and the brothers Lakanen) became 2nd and Kalevan Rasti (Gueorgiou) 3th. But also SNO, Ok Linne, KOK, IFK Göteborg and many others will fight for victory. In the startlist you can take a look at all the teams and their selected runners.

In the womens class the winner in 2007 was Soik Hellas (with Ryabkina), faster than Nydalens SK (Ingvaldsen) and Baekkelaget (Hanne Staff). The victory in the Springcup relay 2008 went to Ulricehamns and also here they have a very strong team (Cecilia Thomasson, Martina Fritschy, Simone Niggli, Jenny Johansson and Maja Alm). Also in this startlist you can check the teams and their runners.

Program:
Women start: 15h (26/04)
Women finish: 18h45 (26/04)
Men start: 22h (26/04)
Men finish: 8h30 (27/04)

Last year a lot of Belgium runners were present (club Trol, Fabien Pasquasy, Thomas van der Kleij, Bart Delobel and Joost Talloen).
Also in 2008 2 Belgian runners will particpate:

Bart Delobel (IF Brahe): 1st leg (12,7km night-o)
Dennis Ducro (NTNUI 5): 2nd leg (12,3km night-o)

It's possible to watch tiomila on web-tv. It costs 60 Swedish crowns (= 6,5€) for all relays.

3. Wie is jullie prof?

In oriëntatieloop?

Mass start Arenberg: report - map - photos

Firstly we want to say ‘thank you’ to all the participators who were present at the orienteering competition in Leuven (16/04). It’s impossible to organise a nice event and evening without motivated and fair sportsmen and –women.
I also want to thank the other Slokmembers. All these youngsters were very helpfull to reach our goal. That goal was: to try to organise an attractive orienteering event to convince other people of the beauty of our sport. And we also wanted to organise a high-level competition for our best national runners. So we did a lot of efforts in promotion, planning and organisation for this event. Obviously this wasn’t possible without the help of our slok-teammates. Thanks all of you!

The entrylist of this regional competition was great: nearly 100 participators from the north and south of our country. The concept of the competition is comparable with the Norwegian (long distance) competition Blodslitet.
They also use the mass start (see video1) concept with different loops. The first loops are forked and the last one is straight for everyone. Because of the different controls it’s possible to make the difference/gaps in the beginning of the race. And at the first control one of the favourits (Frank Buytaert) lost already more than 2 minutes and could already start his chase. Etienne Van Gasse started very fast, followed closely by Pieter Hendrickx, Yannick Michiels and Fabien Pasquasy. In this order of rank they passed through the beautifull arena.

In the second loops the gaps between the runners became larger. But the top3 (Pieter, Fabien and Etienne) started together at the longest and straight loop. In a second group we saw: Bart Delobel and 2 junior runners Wouter Leeuws and Yannick Michiels. A little bit later Jo Linten, Paul Goossens, Michel Bastin and some other runners passed through the arena.
The last loop was very exciting because the 3 runners stayed closely together. In the end Etienne Van Gasse showed his physical shape and took the victory. Fabien Pasquasy became second followed by Pieter Hendrickx. (visible on the video2 below)

In the womens class Kim Geypen performed very strong. She immediately took the lead and stayed in a group with some strong male runners. Greet Oeyen took a bad start, but finally she became 2nd. For the 3th place we saw a close fight between Severine Vandermeulen and Dorota Kosinska. Finally Severine made the top3 complete.

Note that not all people who ran the B and C courses are found in the results list. This is due to a mistake on our part, where we did not notice immediately that an unknown badge was detected previously. Runners who tried to write their timing data into the computer during that time received no signal that their time was not registered. If you want to appear in the results list, just send jeroen.hoekx@hamok.be your time, together with a copy of your printout if you still have that. Our apologies.

Nederlands:

Onze excuses.

1. Etienne Van Gasse 33’03

Preview Mass Start Arenberg

Tomorrow (16/04) an individual race with mass start will take place in Leuven. At the moment we have 76 participators for the 7km-race, so only 24 places are still available. It's still possible to enter by sending an email to jeroen.hoekx@hamok.be . An other oportunity is to enter at the competitioncenter tommorow, but we have a maximum of 100 participators in the mass start.
It's important to be present before 19h because of the information and the demonstration. Clearing emits will take place at 19h15.

At the moment 8 male runners ranking in the Belranking top 20 have entered for this event. In the womens class 6/20 toprunners will be present. The startlist (visible below) is based on the current ranking. The competition number is important for your startposition, specially for the men. All women will start in the same row.
The terrain is very fast, but technical skills will be necesary to take the victory. Etienne Van Gasse won this event last year, but also Fabien Pasquasy, Pieter Hendrickx and Bart Delobel are among the favourits. Maybe Michel Bastin, Joost Talloen, Frank Buytaert, a junior runner or someone else can surprise...
In the womens class we can expect a close fight between Greet Oeyen and Kim Geypen. But also Severine Vandermeulen, Saartje Sallaerts and the others are ready to show their great shape.

Starlist Men (click on the picture to enlarge)

The secretariat opens at 18h, and at 19h the first start will take place in B (5km) and C (3km)-class. Those runners can enter at the competition center.

Nederlands:

3 days of Belgium coming closer.

Main event in Belgium this year, the 3 Days of Belgium count at this time 939 registered runners : people from France, Germany, Switzerland, Great-Britain, Holland, Spain, Denmark, amongst 18 countries.
Some interesting routechoices have been posted on the webpage of the event

We hope the forest will look more like the 2nd. At least the comments of some preruns that have been made were like this:

- Terrains are beautiful and not too steep- The courses are fun and the technique does really well fit the category- The forests are well-stocked with game (wild boars, deers,...) and May flowers will be wonderful!

Besides the races a fun atmosphere will be ensured by the "Fun O'club" team which is preparing a sprint relay, a rock concert and other entertaining stuff.
If you still want to register you have to be fast. After 15th April 2008, a less attractive price will be applied and the final closing date is Thursday 1st May 2008. Also for the WRE which is the 2nd day of the 3days there is a deadline at 27th of april.

HOCup

In the previously unmapped karst terrains near Couvin, Belgian elite runner Fabien Pasquasy organised the very first HOCup this weekend. Three events were organised: a model event, a sprint and a middle distance. The sprint and middle distance races were the French speaking community championships in these disciplines. The best Walloon runners were present, together with French teams from Besançon and Douai and some Flemish runners, including the Slok students team.

Model Event

The model event took place on the map "Les grottes de Neptune" and featured something that looked like a giant hill at first sight, but a closer look revealed a giant depression, not seen on a Belgian map before. The rest of the run consisted of getting acquainted with rocks and downhills, which was quite a long time ago.

Sprint race

Etienne and Vincent

The first serious event was the sprint race in and around the town of Nismes. The first controls were on a large open hill, which required careful orienteering, as several runners ran past their controls. The race then proceeded into the centre of the town, with some controls near the old castle. The finish area was a park, with route choices with bridges.

One interesting thing to note is that in the case of controls 16-17 and 17-18 both routechoices were equally fast in running time. The runners who decided in advance or very fast whichever route they were going to take were the fastest runners there!

The men's class was won by French runner Johann Tinchant (in HOC's relay team), who was just 3 seconds faster than TAD's Simon Leroy. Raptor Etienne Van Gasse took the third position 12 seconds behind. He said, however, that his real goal was the Slok mass start event on wednesday and that this race was just a training run. 7 runners arrived within one minute of the winner, leaving the middle distance on sunday to decide which runner was going to win HOCup.

Johann Tinchant

Johann Tinchant, taking home his bottle of Chimay.

In the women's class, Flemish runner Greet Oeyen (hamok) took the victory, 20 seconds faster than Slok's Miek Fabré and exactly one minute faster than Aline Hermans.

Greet Oeyen

Greet Oeyen, taking Sam's bottle of Chimay with her.

Middle distance

The middle distance race was quite long for a middle distance race, especially for the Women's class, but well, the terrain was so nice that it was a pleasure to run a longer middle distance.

20080413x

The first controls were in a detailed area, and the race continued in larger rocks in open terrain, before reaching its climax in the un-Belgian forest right before the finish.

The men's class was once again won by Tinchant, with Van Gasse in second position and Slok runner/coach Thomas van der Kleij taking the third place. He won in a time of about 57 minutes. For good measure: Fabien Pasquasy's trial run when he was still injured took him 48 minutes.

20080413y

With his second victory, Tinchant also won HOCup, with Van Gasse second and vdK hopping over quite a few runners to the third position, seconds ahead of Ardoc's Michel Bastin.

The women's class was won by Finnish runner Annamari Vierikko. She was almost two minutes faster than sprint winner Oeyen, who took the overall ranking. Numbers 2 and 3 of the sprint race were plagued with problems, with Fabré not wanting to risk her ankle, which she injured during the junior team training camp in Sweden and Hermans mispunching.

This year's event was certainly worth the time and I guess the maps were slightly cooler than the Flemish District championship. Let's hope that the maps can be raced on during important events in the future. (No Belgian champs as Pasquasy himself wants to win that :-)

Flemish District championship Sprint

Today the district championship Sprint distance took place in the north of Belgium. Some good runners were absent, because they participated on a new map in the south. The review about that Hocup will be published in future on this website. Also the winner of the championship last year (Jan Gilot) was absent.
Finally it was Bart Delobel (returned from a trainingscamp in Scandinavia) who took the victory. This season (EOC and WOC) he will focus on sprintdistance, so this was a good test. He was more than 30 seconds faster than Frank Buyaert. Jan Oeyen and Desmond Franssen (who won the championship already in 2005) run the same time and became both 3th.
In the womens class Kim Geypen took an easy victory. She won with a big margin and was faster than Saartje Sallaert and Katrien Bruyninckx.

Mass start Arenbergpark: bulletin 2

Bulletin 2 of the mass start event in the Arenbergpark is now available.

With only one week to go, the entry list is looking interesting. Expect a preview somewhere next week.

Entries accepted until 10/04 23:59, but we're flexible with the vacant places.

English

Due to concerns that the night might fall while the runners are still in the forest, the official starting time of the Slok Mass Start event has been changed to 19h30. We're sorry for the inconvenience this early hour might cause, but we want the best to win and not the most lucky.

A list with entered runners is now also available. Pre-entries can be sent until HOCup/VK sprint. Some vacant places will be available, as detailed in bulletin 1.
