Preview: Belgian night relay

Tomorrow the start of the night o-season in Belgium will take place. Traditionally the first competition is a night relay with 3 runners in each team. This year, the club Trol will organise the relay in Kasterlee (Hoge Mouw) with coursesetter Wiet Laenen.
In 2007 the club Omega (Bart Delobel and the brothers Roel and Bart van de Moortel) won the relay. Also this year they have a strong team with 3 different runners: Joost Talloen, Miek Fabre and Wouter Leeuws. Kol finished in 2nd position last year and they decided to keep confidence in the same team: Yannick Michiels, Roger Bockx and Wannes Hendrickx.
Also Hamok will probably fight for the victory. They even have 5 strong teams! The more detailed teaminformation, you can find back in the comments.

The other teams (Omega, Trol, Kol, Hamok) and their legrunners are visible if you check the comments below this article. The teamcompositions from maybe other (FRSO) teams are still a surprise. Borasca has no team at the startline this edition.

WC Einderheide

Low temperatures, falling leaves, fast forests, high speed orienteering: yes, the reason we've been training all summer long has started: the Wintercriterium!

According to the Federation website, the fourth event was run yesterday, on Einderheide in Riethoven (NL), together with a Dutch national event. The ranking itself, though, seems to have missed the second event (the Flemish middle distance championship) unfortunately.

Last year, the ranking was won by Wannes Hendrickx, and he plans to do the same this year, he assured De Laatste Post. Competition will be tough though. Oeyen, Timmers, Buytaert and Hendrickx himself are among the top runners who competed in all events up to now. Van der Kleij (x3), Franssen (x2) and your correspondent have already missed one or more events and are already facing a deficit.

In the women's class, Kim Steegen won last year and she's also aiming high this year, but she will have a tough time, as Greet Oeyen is already closing in on her.

Sunday's race had an international podium in the men's class, with yours truly taking the first place, Wouter Foppen (NL) in second position and Ralph Kurt (GER) completing the winners rostrum. Far more surprising was that Dunja van de Riet was marginally faster than Greet Oeyen in the women's class, with junior Anne van Zweeden in third place.

Jeneveraflossing editie 2008

In Leuven zit de eerste reeks kaarttrainingen|initiaties in het Arenbergpark er weer op. De traditie wil dat er op het einde daarvan een studentikoze activiteit plaatsvindt. De Slok-jeneveraflossing op 10 november 's avonds is een open wedstrijd volgens het onderstaande concept:



De vorige editie werd gewonnen door Elien Melis en Joost Talloen. Wij zagen Joost bezig op de sloktrainingen en durven gerust zeggen dat hij zich volledig op deze wedstrijd aan het focussen is. Elien daarentegen, zagen we nog niet op de sloktrainingen, en we mogen dus daaruit ook besluiten dat ze zich volledig op deze wedstrijd aan het focussen is. Om de voorbereiding niet te eenzijdig te laten verlopen, heeft De Laatste Post ook vernomen dat ze deelneemt aan het BK universitair twee dagen ervoor, kwestie van de oriëntatieautomatismen terug op punt te stellen.

De PR kant van de organisatie is in handen van Bram Boeckx en Bruno De Lat. Beiden overlopend van organisatietalent. De slok-coaches zorgen voor de sportieve kant van de zaak.

Het EC is de "baar" van LBK (spreek "LBK" uit als "Ken"), alwaar er croques en een warme zaal ter beschikking staan van de lopers, evenwel na een klein inschrijfbedrag betaald te hebben. Inschrijven doe je door mij een mail te sturen, liefst voor 9 november, zodat we genoeg kaarten kunnen drukken. Student/niet-student, iedereen welkom op dit niet-te-missen evenement.

Teambuilding: juniors en seniors

In het weekend van 21 tot 23 november organiseert VVO een startweekend voor de junior- en seniorploeg in de omgeving van Tongerlo om het nieuwe seizoen in te luiden. Geen weekend vol harde oriëntatietrainingen maar wel: teambuilding (MTB, avonturenparcours, enz), een presentatie van een sportdeskundige,.. maar ook een samenzijn om de doelstellingen voor 2009 te bepalen en alle neuzen in dezelfde richting te krijgen.

Iedere atleet kan zijn/haar eigen doelstellingen bekend maken en ook de trainers van hun kant zullen wat verduidelijking brengen rond het nieuwe seizoen waar ze graag met een grote groep aan willen starten. Belgian championship sprint: results and map

On saturday (18/10) the replay of the Belgian championship sprint distance took place. Because of a stolen control (the story) during the previous edition, only the class HE had a second chance yesterday.
The previous edition took place in Lommel city. The replay took place in Genk, in a forrest environment. So in this terrain the fast runners weren't the big favourits. This kind of map suited more the technical strong runners.

Start to control 5:
The beginning of the race was pretty fast and easy between buildings and houses. Jan Oeyen took a very fast start and was the leader after 5 controls (the end of the easy part). He was only 1 second ahead of Fabien Pasquasy and Joost Talloen. But the differences between the several runners were still very small.

Control 5 to 10:
When the runners crossed the street, they came into a more technical and green forrest. At control 6, some favourits like Nicolas Sillien and Michel Bastin lost a lot of time (and the chance to be on the podium). Also the long leg towards control 7 caused problems for several runners. Remarkable: Fabien Pasquasy run very fast towards control 7, he won 20 seconds or more compared with his closest contestants and afterwards he was in the lead with a big margin. Towards control 8, Joost Talloen (who run in 2nd position) made a really big mistake. So finally it was Desmond Franssen who run in 2nd position at the 10th control, only a few seconds ahead of Jan Oeyen (3th) and Thomas van der Kleij (4th).

Control 10 to the finish:
The technical control 11 and the routechoice towards control 12 would decide about the podium. The final controls (13 and 14) were pretty easy. Fabien Pasquasy lost some time on his way to control 12, but his lead was big enough to secure the victory. He already won the middle and relay championships and now he took his 3th national title in 2008.
Desmond Franssen took some bonustime towards control 11, compared with van der Kleij and Oeyen. But towards control 12 he lost 30 seconds with a bad routechoice. So Thomas van der Kleij took the 2nd spot and won silver. Franssen became 3th, Oeyen 4th and De Lat 5th.

Relay Rik Thys: results and map

On friday 17/10, 151 teams (each team includes three runners) were present at the startline in Gruitrodebos during the relay Rik Thys. The competition was again a perfect organisation: a technical map, a nice coursesetting, an interesting environment for the spectators, a radiocontrol, a spectatorscontrol, good accomodation, drinks, food...

Leg1:
After the startsignal Gunther Deferme (who run the CISM last week) took immediately the lead, followed by Desmond Franssen (Trol1), Christophe Bernard (Asub) and Bart van de Moortel (Omega1). The positions didn't change untill the 6th control. But towards the radiocontrol (number 7) Deferme and Franssen made a big mistake, they lost nearly 5minutes. So Christophe Bernard became the lonely leader and he kept this position untill the finish(his time was 43'03). Behind him, the positions changed several times because a lot of runners made mistakes. In the end Jeroen van der Kleij (Ham ok1), who had a bad start, became 2nd with 46'25. Closely followed by Gunther Deferme (2 A), Jo Linten (Wing Heli) and Bart van de Moortel (Omega1) in 5th position.

Leg 2:
Member of the national junior team, Quentin De Neyer (Asub), started in 1st position with a 3 minutes bonus. He told us afterwards that he was a little bit confused during his race. When he arrived at the 3th control, he couldn't find it immediately. But suddenly a woman run towards him and asked him for which control he was looking. He answered: I'm looking for control number 110. The woman had that control in her hand and gave it to him. She explained that some children had stolen it, but she didn't know the exact location of the control. So Quentin punched the 'walking control' and placed it again at the right place. Despite this adventure, he finished still more than 3 minutes ahead of the 2nd team: Omega1 with Sooi Jacobs. 2 minutes later Nico Schrans (Cbos) showed up in 3th position. Luc Melis (Ham ok1) had an offday and lost some crucial time. He became 4th, only 30 seconds ahead of 10W Tac (Paul Goossens).

Leg 3:
At the beginning of the final leg Jean-Noel Debehogne (Asub) was in the lead 4 minutes ahead of Omega (Roel van de Moortel), 6 minutes ahead of Cbos (Guy Tirez), 14 minutes ahead of Ham ok (Dries van der Kleij) and 15 minutes ahead of 10W Tac (Benjamin Anciaux). It was for sure that those 5 runners would fight for the victory.
Benjamin Anciaux started very strong and he catched up Dries van der Kleij at the 3th control. But towards the 4th control they split up and Benjamin made a mistake. Van der Kleij continued his race lonely and performed very strong. He passed Tirez and Debehogne and finished with the best leg time in 2nd position. Only Roel van de Moortel succeeded to stay ahead of Dries, so Omega won the relay Rik Thys 2008. They were 3 minutes faster than Ham ok. Asub became 3th, Cbos 4th and 10W Tac 5th. 2/4L who won the relay last year, became 6th.

Vorige week was er nog nergens iets van te vinden en er is nergens anders iets van te lezen blijkbaar (zelfs de frso kalender vermeldt niks), maar wij zouden het toch op prijs stellen moesten de verschillende studenten hieraan willen deelnemen, kwestie van dit jaar geen annulatie aan ons been te hebben.

Slokkers en anderen kunnen datzelfde weekend overigens profiteren van een resem Slok-activiteiten de volgende dag in het Arenbergpark. Meer daarover later.

Preview: Belgian championship sprint distance

On saturday 18/10 the 2nd edition of the Belgian championship sprint distance will take place. Because of an annulation at the 1st edition, the HE will run the championship again (story about the annulation). This edition, the competition will take place in a forrest instead of a city (maybe to avoid the same problems). The club KOL will organise the championship on the map 'Zillebos', scale 1/5000. The map is renewed in spring 2008 by Ukrainian mapmakers. Important information for the runners: it's not an ISSOM map.

This time 38 runners will participate. During the annulated version in may, 44 runners were present. Bart Delobel and Fabien Pasquasy were at EOC, but now they can try to take the victory. Also some junior runners like Michiels and Genar can fight for the victory in the elite class. On the other hand some strong runners like Jeroen Hoekx, Tomas Hendrickx, Nicolas Sillien and Etienne Van Gasse will be absent on saturday because of different reasons.

New Startlist:
If we take a look at the startlist HE, we can see that the best runners will start at the end. Fabien Pasquasy is the big favourit and he'll start in last position. Also the other favourits like Bart Delobel, Michel Bastin and Thomas van der Kleij will start very late.

If we analyse the startlist more carefully, it seems that the startlist is based on the Belgian raking. Only when 2 runners of the same club start very closely, the organisation has switched this situation (marked in yellow on the picture). Attention: the startlist is renewed yesterday, so some starttimes have been changed and runners have been added.

Preview: Relay Rik Thys

On friday 17/10, the biggest relay in Belgium takes place. 155 teams (most of them military) will be present at the startline. So 465 participants will run and orienteer in Gruitrodebos. This forrest (terrain photos) and map is one of the best areas in the north of Belgium. The terrain is pretty technical and challenging. The map 'Gruitrode' was also used during JWOC 1997, the routechoices of Thiery Gueorgiou are available here: part1 and part2.

Also the organisation (Patrick Wallaert and the army) of this relay is special, compared with other o-organisations in Belgium. In the past, it was possible to follow the competition as spectator by speaker, radiocontrol, tv-screen, spectatorscontrol and at the change-over-area. These factors cause a very good atmosphere during the race.

Last year, the military team 2/4L (Baert, Simkens, Haex) took the victory. But this year they run without Simkens. He's replaced by Jannis because of an injury. Trol was 2nd last year, but they also had to change their team. Laenen and W Franssen will be absent and are replaced by Meeussen and Marinus. The big favourits this year will be Hamok (3th in 2007). Luc Melis and the brothers Jeroen and Dries van der Kleij will represent Hamok1.
Some outsiders: Asub (Bernard, Deneyer and Debehogne), Omega (Jacobs, B Vandemoortel and ?), 10W Tac (Engelen, Anciaux and Goossens), CBOS (Pathoens, Schrans and Tirez), KOL (Michiels, Nijst and Bockx) and Irmep Kmilo (Vandercammen, Marchal and Wathelet).

Flemish championship middle distance

Today the district championship in the north of Belgium took place. In december 2007 a world ranking event was organised on the same map: Hechtelse Duinen (results WRE 2007). During that WRE Bart Delobel won the competition in HE. In 2008 he already won 3 Flemish championships (long, sprint and night). So he was for sure the big favourite today.

But Bart was tired, because he practised sports the whole week in the army. Jeroen Hoekx ran very strong today and he won the district championship. He was 17 seconds faster than Bart Delobel and nearly 2 minutes faster than Desmond Franssen (3th).

In the womens class, it was a fight between Aline Hermans and Greet Oeyen. Aline Hermans took the victory, she was 1 minute faster than Greet. But Aline lives in the south of Belgium, so Greet is the new Flemish champion middle distance. Ewa Fiuk became 3th.

EYOC - Belgian results

The European Youth Orienteering Championships is a high level competition for orienteers in the classes H/D16 and H/D18. This weekend a lot of strong athletes are present in Suisse. Yesterday the long distance competition took place. Elisabeth Henkes (16th in D18) run a strong race and also Wouter Leeuws (37th in H18), Jeremy Genar (43th in H18) and Bruno Parmentier (44th in H16) had a decent race.

Today it was the relay (together with the Suisse national championship relay) and tomorrow a sprint distance (together with the 9th national competition in Suisse: also sprint distance). In the relay Elisabeth Henkes run again a good race, she finished 4th on the first leg, only 20 seconds slower than the winner.

Wisselbeker Rik Thys - Hertberg

Rik moet niet goed gezind zijn geweest gisteren, terwijl hij toekeek op het geklungel van al die lopers daarbeneden. Want een geklungel was het, op dit zonovergoten evenement, tenminste, gesteld dat de Hertberg een paar honder meter hoger zou zijn geweest en dus de loper tot boven het grijze wolkendek had gebracht. Nu had het meer weg van regenovergoten, kortom, de ideale start van het nieuwe winterseizoen!

De Wisselbeker

Nooit geweten dat er zoveel mensen gelukkig waren met wat computerproblemen. De schande zou ondraaglijk zijn geweest en de publieke schandpaal die het internet is, is toch te verkiezen boven een papieren uitslag: "Ook goed gelopen vandaag, Bart". 10 fouten en meer was de norm en zulk een prestatie leverde de 106-posten-baanlegsters een traktatie op. Uit goede bron weten wij dat Sien enkel Rodenbach drinkt en Miek Ice-Tea, met mate uiteraard, een evenwicht dat niet iedereen kan houden.

De gemiddelde loper vergat dat een Rik Thys niet door een extreem hoge loopsnelheid gewonnen wordt, vorig jaar was de uitzondering die de regel bevestigde, maar door het nauwgezet observeren van mogelijke postlocaties en daar dan de juiste uit te kiezen, simpel, nietwaar? Wij geloven trouwens nog steeds niet dat we een fout hebben gemaakt bij post 6.

De Rik Thys was ook de eerste ontmoeting van de grote kanonnen van het WinterCriterium. Buytaert, Hendrickx, Oeyen, Timmers en uw dienaar zagen er weer om ter scherpst uit. Nieuwe namen hebben ook hun oog laten vallen op dit klassement. Kijk dus uit naar Franssen en van der Kleij. Het belooft een spannende winter te worden. Zo ook bij de dames, wie herinnert zich de heroïsche duels tussen Oeyen en Steegen niet meer? De Laatste Post houdt u op de hoogte.

Dat Omega de wisselbeker weer eens won, was een detail.

World Cup - Final Round

Dit weekend vindt in de omgeving van Zurich, Zwitserland de laatste ronde van de World Cup plaats.
Op het programma staan een Middle distance op zaterdag en de ondertussen beruchte PostFinance Sprint op zondag. Deze sprintwedstrijd heeft ondertussen een indrukwekkende reputatie opgebouwd en staat bekend voor het enorme aantal supporters en de goede sfeer.

Thomas mag morgen de spits afbijten en start als eerste loper om 13.21u, een 20 minuutjes later is het aan Fabien om aan het naar Zwitserse normen vrijwel vlakke( 160m stijgen) 8.2km lange parcours te beginnen.

Op de kaart ziet het terrein voor de Middle er voor ons Belgen vrij vertrouwd uit, maar de kleine vegetatie zones kunnen het misschien wel moeilijk maken.

Voor Thomas is dit zijn eerste start in een World Cup wedstrijd dit seizoen en hij heeft bijgevolg nog geen punten gesprokkeld, maar Fabien staat momenteel 107e en hoopt waarschijnlijk enkele plaatsen in het klassement op te schuiven.

Hoewel het seizoen ondertussen toch alweer lang bezig is, lijkt de concurrentie toch ook goed voorbereid aan de start te staan, afgaande op de berichten die we deze week via WorlfofO konden lezen.
Bij de mannen maken enkel Daniel Hubmann en Thierry Geourgiou aanspraak op de eindoverwinning. Thierry is erop gebrand het WOC aflossingsfiasco (Thierry moest opgeven omwille van een allergische reactie op een bijensteek) voorgoed achter zich te laten, maar moet om aanspraak te kunnen maken op de eindoverwinning rekenen op een falende Hubmann. Of dat in Hubmann’s thuisland zal gebeuren is maar de vraag...
Onze vrienden van Ultimate Orienteering publiceerden deze week een mooi interview met beide heren.
Enkele toppers zoals Emil Wingsted (momenteel 4e) en Anne Margrethe Hauskens wederhelft Anders Nordberg (momenteel 6e) moeten jammer genoeg verstek laten voor deze wedstrijden wegens ziekte .

In de vrouwenreeks wordt het minder spannend aangezien Anne Margrethe Hausken reeds voor de start zeker is van de eindoverwinning, maar ook zij is erg gemotiveerd om nog goed te presteren in Zwitserland. Plaats 2 en 3 zijn ook zo goed als zeker voor Minna Kauppi en Sofie Johansson, maar het wordt spannender voor de andere plaatsen in de top 10.

Leuk weetje: het IOF prijzengeld voor de top 6 in de overall World Cup is als volgt : 1200, 800, 600, 400, 300 and 200 Euros. Daarnaast loven de Zwitserse organisatoren ook nog een mooi bedrag uit, met bv 1000 CHF (+- 640 euro) voor de overwinning op de Sprint.
Een mooi bedrag, maar in vergelijking met de 8000 euro startgeld van Sven Nijs toch nog steeds peanuts...:)
