Postfinance Sprint - Wereldbekerfinale

Vandaag werd de postfinance sprint of de wereldbekerfinale gelopen in het oude stadscentrum van Zürich, waar tegelijk een autoloze zondag plaatsvond. Bij de vrouwen was de grote vraag of nationale sportheldin Simone Niggli-Luder toch nog de wereldbeker kon binnenhalen na haar mooie overwinning op zaterdag. Zij won tot hier toe op haar thuisterrein alle edities van de postfinancesprint (behalve vorig jaar toen ze niet deelnam omwille van de geboorte van haar dochter Malin).

Stand na 8e wereldbeker op zaterdagavond :

Slechts 8 punten verschil tussen nr 1 en 3. Ook Mina Kauppi volgde op 5 punten maar zij nam niet deel aan de Zwitserse wereldbekerwedstrijden. Aangezien er vandaag voor dubbele punten werd gelopen, was het duidelijk dat de overwinnaar van vandaag een grote kans had op eindwinst in de wereldbeker.

Onder luid supporter van de Zwitsers ging Simone sterk van start met meteen 10 seconden voorsprong aan de eerste radiopost. De concurrentie volgde nog op een zucht. Consternatie aan radiopost 5: Helena Jansson werd gediskwalificeerd omdat ze door verboden terrein was gelopen. De strijd ging nu tussen Simone en Marianne Andersen. Marianne kon echter haar achterstand niet meer goed maken en eindigde 3e op 23 seconden na Simone Niggli-Luder.

Simone en de anders zo beheerste Zwitsers gingen allemaal uit hun dak en het was bijzonder grappig om het sappige en bijna onverstaanbare zwitserse dialect van Simone te horen.

Bij de mannen moest er al veel verkeerd gaan of Daniel Hubmann moest zijn voorsprong van 80 punten in de wereldbeker nog prijs geven. Wereldkampioen sprint Andrey Khramov ging het sterkst uit de startblokken, opgejaagd door een trio Zwitsers (Hubmann, Hertner, Merz). Vervolgens kwam Hertner aan de leiding, maar een sterk finishende Daniel Hubmann won uiteindelijk de finale met meer dan 16 seconden. Een sterk opzettende David Schneider werd uiteindelijk nog tweede.

Het fiere Zwitserse volk was tevreden, en met recht: met Simone en Daniel hadden ze de postfinancesprint én de wereldbekerwinnaars in hun rangen. Bovendien eindigde ze bij de mannen met 5 in de eerste zes, en bij de vrouwen met 6 in de eerste tien voor de sprint. Van een dominantie gesproken...

4th national event in Belgium: results

Today the 4th national event in Belgium took place (map Sonnisheide), one of the most beautiful maps in Flanders. The sun was present, the organisation perfect and the coursesetting was nice. Nothing to complain about.
In class H21E Nicolas Sillien surprisingly took the victory. Despite his delayed start today, he peformed strong. It looks like he's in good shape again after a disappointing Belgian championship long distance. Geert Simkens, probably the strongest runner today, made a few big mistakes in the beginning of the race and finished in 2nd position. The brothers Hendrickx (Wannes and Tomas) became 3rd and 4th. The last one started training for orienteering again since 3 weeks. This result looks promising for the future.
Some other o-stars had some 'good' excuses for their bad performances today. Jef Boeckx, Thomas van der Kleij and Ken Peeters went mountainbiking for 4 hours on saturday. Andis Laveikis and the Franssen-brothers participated at a streetrace in Halle-Zoersel. ALs the variathlon took place on saturday with Jan Delobel, Gert Claes, Jo Linten and many other orienteers at the startline. And last but not least: Jeroen Hoekx did expect a forking during his race today. That's why he searched for an other control at number 15, even when he saw Benjamin Anciaux punching this right control.

In class D21E Greet Oeyen took the victory ahead of Veerle Tulleneers and Els Talloen in 3rd spot (who crossed the finishline together with Greet).

Regionale Molenheide: Resultaten

In poppel vond op zondag 20/09 de regionale georganiseerd door de ploegencommissie plaats. De opkomst was eerder laag (slechts 143 deelnemers), maar de aanwezigen maakten er een goede training van.
In omloop 1 was de Let Ozols Agris de uiteindelijke winnaar. Samen met Winston Franssen (een 2e plaats, ondanks dat hij er een intervaltraining van gemaakt had) stak hij boven de rest uit. Enkele concurrenten verkozen om zich via een 'specialleke' (omloop 8) voor te bereiden op het komende wintercriterium. Ook in deze categorie werd niet vol doorgelopen, maar technisch getraind. Andere toppers zoals Pieter Hendrickx, Jeroen Hoekx en Thomas van der Kleij liepen zelfs een persoonlijke training buiten categorie.

Pasquasy zet BRE Banneux naar zijn hand

Pasquasy (Foto-Worldofo) was twee klasses te sterk op de flanken van de Vesder. Hij won met meer dan 20 minuten voorsprong op Nicolas Sillien. Bij de dames was Muriel Vandermeulen de sterkste.

WK voor Militairen

De voorbije 2 dagen waren er nog de middle distance en aflossing op het Wereldkampioenschap voor militairen.
De middle distance werd wederom gewonnen door Hubmann, voor Novikov en Hertner. Benjamin Anciaux finishte hier als 1e Belg op een 63e plaats, gevolgd door Gert Claes (84e) en Gunther Deferme (86e).

Tijdens de aflossing presteerde België goed. De eerste ploeg (in volgorde: Delobel, Simkens en Deferme) finishte op een mooie 20e plaats op 21min van Zwitserland. Met deze resultaten voldeed de Belgische militaire ploeg aan de vereiste criteria van ACOS Ops & Tr. Opdracht volbracht, aldus Dries Heuninckx.

Trol wins relay H. Petit

Today the relay Hugues Petit took place in the south of Belgium (Bertrix). In this event, every team needs 4 members: 1 cross country runner and 3 orienteering runners. It's a pitty that a lot of military runners were absent because of the world champs in Estonia.

At the startline of the cross country race, a lot of strong runners were present. But Koen Wilssens (Trol1) was outstanding. He finished in the lead, more than 1 minute ahead of the other runners (Tim Stessens in 2nd spot).
After this race, it was up to the orienteers. Surprisingly it was Winston Franssen (Trol2) who was in the lead at the spectatorscontrol. He started 6 minutes behind the leaders (Jeremy Genar was the cross country runner in Trol2), but he overtook everyone. At the finishline W. Franssen changed over in 1st position and he even ran the best individual time of all orienteers.

But Trol2 didn't succeed to stay in the lead untill the end of the race. Finally (during the last leg) Trol1 with Koen Wilssens, Karl Vervoort, Wim Vervoort and Ken Peeters (2nd best individual time) took the victory. The military team 2/4L (Serge Baerts as 3rd runner) became second and Trol2 finished in third position.
Officially 2/4L won this event, only military teams are allowed to win, because they had the best accumulated time of 2 teams.

"Van der Kleij tevreden met toptien"

Het Nieuwsblad schreef twee artikels over het BK lange afstand in Tessenderlo, waar favoriet Fabien Pasquasy met de overwinning en bijhorende bierkorf naar huis mocht.

Hamok-voorzitter Luc Melis kwam als eerste aan bod. Op 12 september verscheen een voorbeschouwing. Melis gokte op zijn toploper en titelverdediger Thomas van der Kleij voor een sterke prestatie, ondanks zijn voorbereidingsproblemen. Verder vertelde Melis: "Het zal er spannend aan toe gaan."

Het ging er inderdaad ook spannend aan toe, wat de aandachtige lezer al uit ons artikel te weten kwam. Vandaag kopte Het Nieuwsblad "Van der Kleij tevreden met toptien" en liet de Kogel van Kattenbos dan ook ruim aan het woord. Relevant voor de concurrentie is ondermeer: "Over twee weken hoop ik in Leopoldsburg al een stuk sterker te staan, en volgende maand is er in Namen het BK over de korte afstand.". Het lijkt er dus sterk op dat die dagen met rood aangekruist staan op de kalender in het vdK-trainingscentrum in de Spinnewielstraat.

De eerste afspraak is natuurlijk wel de ploegenwedstrijd in Poppel van zondag, die een beter beeld moet geven van hoe de voorbereidingen op het wintercriterium verlopen bij de toppers uit het regionale circuit.

WK voor militairen: Long distance

De Belgische militaire ploeg is aan het werk op het WK voor militairen in Estland.

Geert Simkens werd 64e, kort gevolgd door Gunter Deferme en Gert Claes op een 65e en 66e plaats. Nico Schrans werd 99e en Dries Heuninckx 108e van de 136 deelnemers.

Het podium was voor Daniel Hubmann, François Gonon en Matthias Merz.

Pasquasy and Geypen win Belgian champs long distance

Today the Belgian national champs long distance took place in Tessenderlo. The forest was rather typical for Flanders: flat, a lot of paths and a good runability. The distance for H21E was 15.4km with 100m climbing and for women elite: 8.6km. This competitions counts as a world ranking event.

Pasquasy takes revenge:

In class H21E the French runner, Johan Tinchant, had an early starttime (no advantage in this kind of terrain). He ran a good race without making big mistakes and finished his race in 1h22'. The strong Belgian runners had a late starttime and Geert Simkens was the first one who nearly beat Tinchant. Simkens was only 30sec slowers and finally finished in 5th spot.

Pieter Hendrickx performed even stronger. The WOC-runner made a new besttime (1h19') despite some big mistakes in the beginning of the race. The athlete who started 4 minutes behind him (Ken Peeters) even saw Hendrickx at the 5th control.

Michel Bastin was the next runner, sprinting to the finish. Despite his high speed in the finisharea, he became 4th only 3 seconds slower than Tinchant. Only one person was able to beat Hendrickx toptime: Fabien Pasquasy. The tallest and fastest orienteer in the forest ran almost 3 minutes faster than Hendrickx. This new besttime was good enough to become the Belgian champion long distance 2009!

Close fight in womens race:
In class D21E, the Belgian champs long distance became a real thriller. Three girls from the same team finished within 17 seconds! These few seconds decided about bronze, silver and gold. During the whole race the fight for gold was very close, but at the end Kim Geypen took the victory. She was 6 seconds faster than Miek Fabré and 17 seconds faster than juniorrunner Elisabeth Henkes.

Preview Belgian championship Long Distance

In the men's class, the situation is simple. The only one who can beat Fabien Pasquasy (Hainaut O.C.) is Fabien Pasquasy himself. But that's what we've been writing in both 2008 and 2007. Both times, we were wrong and Pasquasy, the 1999, 2003 and 2005 champion and 6 time WOC long distance finalist did not live up to the expectations. This year might be different. Last year's winner, Thomas van der Kleij (hamok) is currently suffering a viral infection on his vestibular system and was not able to train the last 1,5 months. The 2006 and 2007 champion, Jan Gilot (K.O.L.) is also injured at the moment and is currently focused on his basketball career. He does not participate.



Outsiders for the victory are Michel Bastin (O.L.G. St. Vith "ARDOC"), growing stronger and stronger after his mid-season baby-break. After the relay, he wrote: "Très content de ma course, tant techniquement ... que physiquement, surtout après 19 entrainements/compets en 20 jours." And indeed, the tough terrain in Houterenberg is particularly well suited to Bastin's running style. Another runner who favours tough terrains is Trol's Ken Peeters, training harder than ever before the last months and also showing signs of his good shape at the relay and interclub competitions.

Bastin and Peeters are relatively fresh, having not competed at WOC this year. WOC runners Pieter Hendrickx (K.O.L.) and Jeroen Hoekx (hamok) are also expected to be ready for this championship. Hendrickx ran strong at the World Mountain Running championship. Hoekx spent most of his previous weekend on the couch, due to a start of tonsillitis, only interrupted by the relay championship. The resting period imposed on him was not unneeded on the other hand.

More favourites are the stars of the Relay championship: Omega's finisher Joost Talloen and starter Wouter Leeuws are ready. Talloen, the seasoned runner, is always ready when it really matters. Leeuws is young, but running fast. Then there are the ones out for a revenge: Desmond Franssen was running strong in the forest during his leg and Dries van der Kleij, slightly injured at the relay might be back in his old form. And then, we didn't even mention the eagle of Zoersel, Winston Franssen, focused as always and impressive in the forest at the interclub and relay.

The real outsiders are found in the early minutes of the starting grid. We see Koen Wilssens of Trol start 4 minutes ahead of his club mate Sergey Fedatsenka. Fedatsenka was strong in the same terrain last year. Wilssens was with Hendrickx at the mountaing running championships and is one of the strongest runners in the field. If the will meet in the forest, the two might steam to a very good performance, but Wilssens might also surprise on his own. French runner Johann Tinchant, will most likely set the initial leading time, but foreigners can't win the title.

There is no clear favourite in the women's class. During the relay, Omega was particularly strong. Kim Geypen ran great, but also youngster Elisabeth Henkes performed very well. Last year's winner Miek Fabré has not been training that much this year and it's unsure if she will be able to push hard all race long.

Hamok's Greet Oeyen lives nearby and kept on training hard after her WOC. She was only a bit slower than the leading Omega runners in the relay. This weekend is clearly what she's been aiming at this year. Last year, we had an in depth interview with the other hamok star Sofie Herremans before the long distance championship. She said: "I want to be on the podium, with anything else I'm not satisfied.", and she finished third. We didn't hear these words this time, but rest assured that the goal is the same. Her relay performance confirmed our view.

The women also have their mountain runners: Veerle Tulleneers (omega) won the Belgian championship and she definitely has an advantage in the expected tough terrain.

All in all, the championship is quite open, with many runners at the same level. We already saw exciting competitions at the relay championship. Let's hope the long distance championship brings more of it.

Wilssens & Hendrickx at World Mountain Running Championship

Belgian orienteers Koen Wilssens and Pieter Hendrickx became 56th and 113th at the World Mountain Running Championships. Hendrickx was also representing Belgium at the World Orienteering Championships.

A swiss orienteer, David Schneider(Vehkaladen Veikot), became 21th. Being 4.29 behind, he was the 10th european. Schneider didn't make it to the WOC this year, but has a 4th place from 2003 and 2005. Romanian Ionut Zinca from Wing OK was 32th and Lukas Bartak(OK Tisaren) from Slovakia was 52th.

Omega wins Belgian championship relay

Today club Omega was outstanding in elite class. They won both men and womens race in Pijnven. In womens class, they (Geypen, Fabré and Henkes) won by a big margin ahead of Asub and Hamok. In mens class, we saw a very close fight. Joost Talloen performed really strong as 3rd leg runner and won a long sprint against Dries van der Kleij (Ham ok). Hoc (Drygalski, Tinchant and Pasquasy) finished in 3rd position.
450 participants were present at this national championship. Everyone enjoyed the competition and was very pleased about the organisation. Belgium needs more relay competitions organised this way.

Nederlands:
Omega won het BK bij de dames en heren elite. De vrouwenploeg had een ruime voorsprong ASUB en hamok. Bij de mannen was het een spannende wedstrijd, waar Joost Talloen een langgerekte sprint won van Dries van der Kleij(hamok). Hoc werd derde op een vijftal minuten.
